Samba show

by Franja

I'll be in Sao Paulo from April 5th until April 9th in a business trip. Could somebody recommend if it is possible to attend to some samba show which reproduces the Carnival atmosphere? If I'm not wrong, I heard that some samba schools have permanent groups of musicians and dancers that organize performances and shows outside of Carnival season. As alternative, is there any good show to enjoy the authentic brazilian folkclore? Thanks in advance

Sao Paulo is known as a business/work city. Rio de Janeiro is best known as Carnival city. But you may look the São Paulo show mentioned on the link below:

I'm sending you another link of Cidade do Samba/Rio de Janeiro:

I've never been to one, but maybe you could go to a samba school open rehearsal...

Aguias de Ouro samba school: open rehearsals every Sunday at 8h30 PM. I believe there's an entrance fee of R$ 5.

E-mail: aguiadeouro@aguiadeouro.com.br

You can see pics from their latest rehearsal here:

I believe Vai-Vai samba school also holds open rehearsals all year round, but I couldn't find this information on their website...

Hello!!!

You´re right. There are Samba schools that during the year promove some shows similar to Carnival parades. I recommend The Vai-Vai school. It´s one of the most traditional samba school in São Paulo. It´s around the Bixiga area. It´s easy to get there.
If you are keen on dancing, The Vai-Vai school is the place to be.
I´ve already been there. It was amazing, specially when the drummers started to play the drums. The sound that comes from the drums is fantastic and it involves with the decoration and people around the place.
Whatever you do, refrain from wearing heavy clothes because you probably will dance a lot and the place is hot.
Don´t worry about the price. You´ll pay a fair price and have a lot of fun. However, if you are into drinking different kind of drinks, bear in mind that some of them can be more expensive than usual.

Travel Tips for São Paulo

PARENTHOOD

by RafaelTheSecond

A wonderful father and a spectacular daughter...No doubt. Friendly, understanding, open minded, that is how my friend Mike is; a hippopotamus of culture, great sense of humour and lots of adventure spirits, that is how my friend Robyn is!

It was a honor to welcome them in our beaches and make them know that we have hidden places in the country, and they will impress you!

Boraceia is one of the wildest beaches in the Rio-Santos Road.

This road is very scenic, everybody should travel for one or two days, this is the most beautiful way for you to go to Rio when you leave São Paulo.

the Metro is one of the cleanest and most efficient I've ever seen, but unfortunately it's not so expansive . the Bus services the rest, but people told me that it could get very dangerous to ride the bus at night. Learn enough Portuguese to negotiate with a taxi driver; it's completely stressful if you don't!

Municipal Theater - Teatro Municipal

by Lady_Disdain

The most traditional theater for classical music and performances! From Luciano Pavarotti to the Bolshoi Ballet, this stage has seen it all! Not mention the great brazilian artists who call it home...

If the performances are not to your taste, then visit the theater for its architecture (modelled on the Paris Opera) and great guided tours (free - tuesdays to fridays, from 12:00 to 14:00) and exhibitions with the costume of former performances, pictures and stories of all the great artists.
