Vaccination for Yellow Fever needed when coming from Argentina

by AlfredSt

Hi,
I`m a European and I will stay a few weeks in Buenos Aires and plan my return trip to Europe travelling on land to Brazil- Sao Paulo where I will board a plane back to Madrid.
Does anybody know if you need a yellow fever vaccination when crossing the border? I have heard that in some South American countries this vaccination is needed if you are in one of the other countries but I don't remember which countries those were.
Cheers,

Vaccines
Tourists who have been to, in the past three months, or who are coming from Angola, Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Colombia, Ecuador, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, French Guiana, Liberia, Nigeria, Peru, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Venezuela and Zaire, are required to present an international vaccination certificate against yellow fever. Vaccines against yellow fever are also recommended to all domestic and foreign tourists planning to visit the Brazilian states of Acre, Amazonas, Amapá, Distrito Federal, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins. To be effective, vaccination must take place at least 10 days prior to the date of the trip.

Going from BA to SP you will not be asked for Yellow Fever certificate. But as the above poster mentioned, if you are crossing into Boa Vista from Santa Elena de Uiren in Venezuela, they wont let you in without a ten day old yellow fever certificate. they are pretty strict about it at the Brasilian Frontier Post in the North.

Hi,

You don't need vaccination for Yellow Fever if you are coming from Europe - Buenos Aires/Argentina to Sao Paulo. If you had been coming from other South American country or some Africa country, you should've taken this vaccine. In Sao Paulo city, it's okay to come without this kind of prevention unless some cities in Brazil like Manaus, Goiana, Sao Luiz, Palmas...and other. However, there are many instrutions in www.anvisa.gov.br/paf/controle.htm, but unfortunately only in portuguese language.
I hope you do a good travel.
Best,
Fabiana Castro.

Travel Tips for São Paulo

Portuguese Classes at USP

by peace_prevails

A good language course I have heard is taught at the University of Sao Paulo (USP) - it is called 'Portuguese for Foreigners'

See the following website.
http://www.fflch.usp.br/cl/cursosple.htm

The site is in Pguese but you will get the gist of it. The prices are really reasonable.

R$340 a semester I believe for the course and materials.

You will have to check if they will allow you to enrol if you are not a student in Brazil or elsewhere.

A shopping paradise

by travelmad478 about various shops

São Paulo is a shopping mecca. Wander the upscale neighborhoods to get an amazing spread of beautiful boutiques. There are also several large malls, including the higher-end Shopping Iguatemi and Shopping Pateo Higienópolis.

From airport to airport

by Lady_Disdain

"How do I get from Guarulhos to Congonhas (or vice versa)?"

The easiest, most expensive way is to take a cab. Don't try to bargain with the cab drivers lined up outside the departure gate and asking you if you wan t a cab (the more agressive will try to help you with your luggage before you answer). There is a good chance that you will be ripped off (but if you really want to, try to negociate around R$ 75 or insist that the meter be turned on).

Instead, head over to the booths and prepay your fare. No matter how bad the traffic or what way the driver goes, you've already paid. These cabs are very trustworthy as well.

But the cheapest way is also very easy: shuttle busses. There are plenty of blue and red busses, logoed "Airport Service". The shuttle goes direct, but there are other lines that go to hotels or shopping centers. They charge R$ 24 per passanger.

Yiddish (mama) cooking

by apaula about Z Deli

You can never please a Yiddish mama, especially when it comes to food. You either never have enough food (you look so thin, have you been eating at all???) or you don't have quality food, in other words HER food (you look sick! You were never sick when I was cooking for you!). Sort of an Italian mom with a Yiddish menu...

Talking about menus there is a place in Sao Paulo that you will feel at home even if you have never heard of a Yiddish Mom before.

With two very well located branches (see addresses below), Z-Deli keeps the same format since it's opening in 1982: a small restaurant/deli with home made food and a New York influence. In other words: small, simple and cozy. It works. Enough to say that the renowned - Guia Quatro Rodas- has granted them a star every year since 1982.

The food is delicious even for those not familiar with the Jewish cuisine. A great selection of delicate quiches, Gefilte fish (fish balls) and Vareniks (potato ravioli with onion sauce) is always displayed on their front counters. The service is more than friendly but you'd better eat all your food or you get the mamas upset...

guaruja - beach near santos/sao paolo

by hanspeter_W.

89 Kilometres from Sao Paulo.

How to arrive there from Sao Paulo: Jabaquara Terminal Station. Time travel: 1 hour and 20 minutes. More information: 11 50113421.

The island of Guarujá is the most recognized tourist park in the south-east littoral.

The Guarujá Littoral is one of the most antique health resorts of Sao Paulo; because of its proximity, it attracts a lot of national and international tourists.

This city is fully oriented to tourism and counts with tens of clean and free beaches extended all along urbanized roads.

Some of these beaches, such as Playa Blanca (White Beach), Iporanga and Sao Pedro are placed inside a private village, which makes its access restricted.

Guarujá has an excellent tourist infrastructure: bars, restaurants, supermarkets and commercial centres.

The most important beaches:

Pitangueiras: It is located in the centre of the island. It covers 1800 meters of a scenery enclosed by buildings and large commercial centres, some of them, surround The Beira-mar Avenue.
This beach is ideal for surfing. In the middle of the beach, there is a rocky islet.

Enseada: The beach of Enseada is situated to the north of the island. It covers 11 kilometres bordered by a residential neighbourhood. Its sand is clear and soft. Its main characteristic is the presence of coconut trees and kiosks all over the beach. It is perfect for water sports like windsurf, jet ski y surfing. At the left side of the beach, there is a marina which counts with showers, sanitary and a life-saving post. It is also called "Isla de las Convenciones" (Conventions Island).

Costa de las Tortugas: (Turtle´s Coast) In this beach , there are tours on kayak, ski and motor launch, as well as boats and the possibility of swimming under the water. If someone prefers walking on the ground, the wide strip of sand is ideal for comfortable hikes.

The beaches of Do Eden and Sorocotuba-: Are placed in a closed village.

The beach of Pernambuco: Located in front of Dos Arboredos Island, is constantly visited because of water sports.

The beach of Iporanga: Is situated on a bay close to the native glade, inside a private village.

The beaches of Branca, Preta and Do Camburi: Are vacant and surrounded by vegetation. They are recommendable for surfing.

The beaches of Astúrias and Do Tombo: Are placed to the south. They are ideal for surfing too.

Do Tombo: The beach of Do Tombo is located in front of The Moela Island, a site where there is a lighthouse constructed in 1836. This beach is very well known because of its huge waves, ideal for surfing, and its restful locations for sunbathing.

There are several life-saving posts, however, precaution is necessary because of its strong running.
