The capital of the state is...
by AndreasK
The capital of the state is Manaus, which has been nicknamed “The Paris of the Jungle”. The Portuguese founded it in the 16th century, but Manaus remained a small village until the success of the rubber plantations. It was during this period that the main features of the city, such as the Grand Opera House (Teatro Amazonas, see picture) and the small Palaces of the British plantation owners, were built.

*****Just be aware that there apparently is a fine line btwn what is urban and what is rural up there...even though you would be reeeeally hard-pressed to notice any difference yourself! This sign as you leave the metropolis makes things pointedly clear for you...hehehehehe...*****
"The Science Grove" - Amazonian Culture & Nature

The National Institute of Amazon Research (INPA - INSTITUTO NACIONAL DE PESQUISAS DA AMAZÔNIA) was created in 1995 to develop scientific and technologic studies and to preserve amazonian species.
You can visit INPA and check out expositions of amazonian vegetation, insects and projects developed by the researchers and also see some amazing animals, such as:
Amazonian alligators;
The Giant Otter (They're just so cute! They're the biggest among all the 13 otter species of the world and one of the greatest predators of the tropical rainforests of South America); and
The Amazonian manatee (Species in danger of extinction, exclusively of fresh water, spread throughout the Amazon basin.)
For kids and nature lovers, it's a nice experience.
