Manaus mission trips with Overland Missions

by gimbo123

My son is 19 and looking to go on a mission trip. They travel from Manaus to the surrounding villages at Maues. Please pass on any information (first hand)or advice. We are a little nervous about the trip from a illnes, safety etc.
Overland Mission looks like a well orgnaized and legite Mission. The Bios on the CEO and staff memebers are good. So I am looking to confirm or good advice about the trip.
Thanks for the input.

Maues it is a wonderfull place!!! illnes??anyway this time of nthe year no reason to worry about it Malaria or yellow fever, the river it is pritty higher and thats not the season for Malaria.

Most illnes will be july, august, september when the river is dry.maues it is the land of the Guarana a power drink that has 7 times more cafein than coffe,he will probably have a great experience with the indians over there.

You don't mention when your son is planning to go. I would suggest that you consult with a travel medicine clinic for medical advice, rather than asking us amateurs on VT. Risk factors are different in the more rural areas, than in the more urban areas. Don't forget that many countries have restrictions on entry if you have been to a Yellow Fever country and do not have a valid vaccination certifcate.

Make sure that the "regular" immunizations (HEP A, tetanus, etc. are up to date). Insect repellent containing a high concentration of DEET, sun block, etc. A hat, long pants and long sleeved pants and knee-high rubber boots were our daily wear in the Amazon.

An emergency kit with appropriate antibiotics, in case of severe digestive system issues is something we had with us (and needed) on our trip to the Amazon.

Travel Tips for Manaus

Spend Some Time on the Rio Negro

by AlexisElizabeth

My favorite part of my entire trip to Brazil was the 3-day trip up the Rio Negro. We went piranha fishing, swimming, met the local Amazonian tribespeople, tried to capture caymans by moonlight, saw the elusive pink river dolphins, canoed around in the shallows with a local guide, trecked through the jungle, and slept under the stars in hammocks to the music of the jungle frogs and night creatures. It is an amazing place, and a wonderful opportunity to get away from the city. By the way, the movie Anaconda was filmed there, to give you an idea of what it looks like. My favorite memory was taking a canoe out on the Rio Negro at night looking for caymans. I looked up and saw the Southern Cross and the Big Dipper sharing the same sky above me. Jungle sounds came from the darkness in all directions, and twisty Amazonian trees were occasionally illuminated by heat lightning in the distance. A very surreal and amazing night.

spend at least a day on the river - see the different colors of the meeting of the waters, the Rio negro and the Amazon, try to spot the rare pink dolphin visiting a family that lived along the river and being able to hold in my arms a baby sloth,(left) feed their pet monkey and trying to avoid being eaten by their pet crocodile (12 ft long!)

You will find this very-nearly-lifesize replica of NY/NJ's own Statue of Liberty, here in Manaus, next to a school, from what I've been told. Nice to see we have some friends in the int'l community these days...:-O!!...

Fish for Piranhas

by MikeAtSea

The system is simple, add a piece of meat to a hook, drop the hook to the ground and pull up when a piranha bites. Easier said then done - some in my group were quiet successful in catching piranhas, I on the other side decided to feed them a steak or two - since somehow just the clever ones decided to steal the meat of my hook. No fishing for me :-) Fishing rod - hook and meat

stop by for lunch and indulge in a Brazilian tradition, a sumptuous buffet including a wonderful selection of fresh roasted MEATS which are sliced right off the spits for you...in front of your very eyes...yummmmm!
