Spend Some Time on the Rio Negro
by AlexisElizabeth
My favorite part of my entire trip to Brazil was the 3-day trip up the Rio Negro. We went piranha fishing, swimming, met the local Amazonian tribespeople, tried to capture caymans by moonlight, saw the elusive pink river dolphins, canoed around in the shallows with a local guide, trecked through the jungle, and slept under the stars in hammocks to the music of the jungle frogs and night creatures. It is an amazing place, and a wonderful opportunity to get away from the city. By the way, the movie Anaconda was filmed there, to give you an idea of what it looks like. My favorite memory was taking a canoe out on the Rio Negro at night looking for caymans. I looked up and saw the Southern Cross and the Big Dipper sharing the same sky above me. Jungle sounds came from the darkness in all directions, and twisty Amazonian trees were occasionally illuminated by heat lightning in the distance. A very surreal and amazing night.

spend at least a day on the river - see the different colors of the meeting of the waters, the Rio negro and the Amazon, try to spot the rare pink dolphin visiting a family that lived along the river and being able to hold in my arms a baby sloth,(left) feed their pet monkey and trying to avoid being eaten by their pet crocodile (12 ft long!)

You will find this very-nearly-lifesize replica of NY/NJ's own Statue of Liberty, here in Manaus, next to a school, from what I've been told. Nice to see we have some friends in the int'l community these days...:-O!!...
Fish for Piranhas
by MikeAtSea
The system is simple, add a piece of meat to a hook, drop the hook to the ground and pull up when a piranha bites. Easier said then done - some in my group were quiet successful in catching piranhas, I on the other side decided to feed them a steak or two - since somehow just the clever ones decided to steal the meat of my hook. No fishing for me :-) Fishing rod - hook and meat
