we are family of 4 planning to travel sao paulo in august

Hiya. Im planning my stay at the Sao Paulo Downtown Hostel as well. Here is a great website for hostels worldwide www.hostels.com. The one you are seeking is listed on there. I have read all great reviews about this hostel. A 4 bed-male dorm is 9.50USD. Brazilian breakfast is included as well as security lockers. Good luck.

São Paulo Downtown Hostel has a good location, very central, but you may find the area too busy during the day and dirty dodgy at night, so be aware.
Other cheap hotels that can be more interesting in my oppinion are Formule 1 Paraíso and Formule 1 Paulista.

In a group of four I think you can get a better fare than the SPDowntownHostel.

I checked out Formule 1 website, it is all in Portuguese, so was no help to me. I found that the price for the SP Hostel was cheap $9.50USD, is pretty good for the night. But you think that it is a dodgy area? I've checked out their website and feel pretty confident. It's only for 2 nights then we are heading to Rio.

It is the very centre of São Paulo city and the area at night is not all that safe but it doesn´t mean it is a bad choice. It is a good hostel, I would stay there without worries but for going out to other places at night you better call a cab, do not walk around those streets after 10 or 11 at night... many bad looking people on the streets after hours.
Fare for Formule 1 is R$69 per room with one, two or three persons. So if you are alone it is not all that cheap but still cheap for a hotel in São Paulo in that location. Definetely in two it´s already a very good fare.
A dorm room at SP Downtown Hostel costs R$ 23,00, the cheapest, and R$ 39,00 on a private room alone.
