Good area to rent in, and cost of renting

by bodywise

Hello again,

Would anyone be able to tell me a good area to rent in? I would like something low end, but not a dump. Safe, clean, and affordable. A bachelor would be ideal for just getting started in the city.

I don't know where the English schools are, so it's impossible to exactly identify where I should live to be near work, so I'm just wondering about a decent area that is more or less central, etc.

Also I am wondering what I should expect to pay for an apartment. Just a range would be helpful. Am I looking at say between 500 and 800 dollars, or between 200 and 400 for example?

Another question is the kind of lease generally required in Fortaleza. And also since I won't have a work visa, does that create any obstacles?

Any help will be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Craig (my real name)

Thanks for the info Martin. I'll send you real estate clients if you send me Structural Integration and Craniosacral Therapy clients. I'm glad to be getting networking invites already.

I'll be the only person in the city practicing these two therapeutic diciplines which are highly sought after in the U.S. and Canada.

Cheers,
Craig

The best areas to be looking at are, Meireles, Aldeota and Iracema. These are central (Meirales and Iracema are at the beach and Aldeota is just behind Meireles), safe and the nicest suburbs for apartments.

Aldeota is one of the main shopping areas, with a nice small mall (it has a cinema, and good news is the movies are in English with Portugese subtitles), lots of Boutique and high end shops, there's even an Apple store.

Meireles is where the main beach drag of Biera Mar is and where most of the main 4 and 5 star hotels are. The beach promenade here comes alive at night with the market (mainly tourist stuff), joggers and walkers etc. (think Venice beach).

Iracema is right next to Meireles on the beach, but it's quiter and perhaps a little seedier/earthier. The Pont Inglais (a Victorian style Pier) is here, as is the Art and Culture centre.

These are the best parts of central Fortaleza and are where I'd recommend. Apartments are all high rises and will have been built within the last 10-15 years. As for prices well take your pick. It's possible to rent an apartment for as little as $200... per month! Obviously that's going to be pretty tiny and very basic. For somewhere resonable about $4-500 per month will do the job, and upward for more luxury and a better view.

It's probably best to get there first and contact a local agent than trying to find stuff online. Most of it is in Portugese, great if you speak language, and that which is in English is maily holiday rentals so double the prices. Check into central hotel (in one of these 3 areas) and cruise the shops, you'll find loads of agents and go from there. The choice is huge!

As the lacework, the handcraft style of collored sand bottles is a work of lots of patience and love for what you do!
As the lace,it takes hours, and also sale as a cheap original souvenier from the area.
I'll show a picture here and add more in a travelogue for those interesting in take a look at the technic as well!

Do not forget to enjoy the beaches around...most of them barely touched and full or nature around....never, at all, miss Jericoacoara! Other options are Lagoínha, Baleia, Paracuru, Taíba, Pecém, Morro Branco and the beaches around Icapuí county.

Crab at the beach is a must.

by CactusJim about Terra do sol

This is a "barraca do praia" it is a typical restaurant on the beach here in Cear?. This one is good, located at Praia do Futuro beach just off Santos Dumont Avenue. You can eat your crab or your fish in the restaurant or under the shade of a palm covered table right on the beach. The waiters will get to you no matter where you sit. Agua de Coco is a must and is the best deal too (R$1.00) The Crab (Carengaju) is a must try for a first time visitor. For a good dinner they serve a very good Fried fish with all the fixin?s. This Barraca does have it?s own security, but like everywhere in Brazil leave your valuables at home and keep your money and camera out of sight. Like Seinfeld said the wallet in the shoe bit is not impenetrable to a beach wise thief. The crab is good, but it is sooooooo much work for the amount of meat that you get. Of course one of my all time favorite foods is King Crab from the North Atlantic, there is a world of difference in the tastle and the size of these crabs in Cear?. The shrimp pastel is great for an entrada. The Fried fish dinner is great for an entree.

morro Branco

This is a exotic place ..it´s a beach with cannyons..the principal aspect is that , there you can see diferent sand colours, beyond this sand labirint that you can get into with a local guide
Just go to Morro Banco, do another buggy ride and walk through the cannyon (i´ll put photos for your compreension)
A curiosity..There was made a famous Brazilian Tv show Overture...If you were brazilian, you ´ll know my friend......see the photos..

Ops..don´t forget to buy the sand bottles!!!!!!!!!!

"We live here part time"

Nearby beaches are the real draw of this tourist destination for other Brazilians and Europeans. The only decent beach in the city is Praia Futuro (the best barraca here is CrocoBeach). At night the beachfront is nice in Beira-Mar - catch a beautiful sunset at G-2 barraca.

Some beautiful beaches close by are Prainha & Cumbuco. For the more adventurous try Jericoacoara to the north and Canoa Quebrada to the south.
