Musical Traditions of Maranhao
by mircaskirca
Sao Luis is known as Brazil's capital of reggae music. Besides, the state of Maranhao is home to some of the most beautiful musical traditions in the country and the most famous artists from Maranhao are Alcione, Zeca Baleiro and Rita Ribeiro.
If you are one of those, interested in the local music scene... well, this immense diversity of rhytms of Maranhao will certainly give you a lot of pleasure :)
Here are some of my favourites:
Alcione with the famous Nao Deixe o Samba Morrer from the 70s
and 30 years later on DVD Ensaio Geral
Zeca Baleiro - Telegrama
Zeca Baleiro - Lenha
Rita Ribeiro - No Conforto dos Seus Bracos
Rita Ribeiro - E D'Oxum
You could be in Portugal

Sao Luis is a beautiful old town on the coast, its split into 2 halves, the one half a Bohemian, jazzy and traditional half, with old portuguese buildings all over, complete with the famous outside tiling that you find all over towns in Portugal.
The other half is a young, vibrant city, much more spread out but for me, although it has the beaches, the modern restaurants and discos, it lacks the real feeling that you find in the old half.
This is a photo of the Church in the town square in the old half of Sao Luis.
When you're walking through sao luis you can really fell history catching up with you, the buildings so old and the architecture so colonial, its not hard to imagine all the people and characters that have trod through them before you over the years.
