Albergue Juventude Solar das Pedras: Hostel in a Historical Building
Busy and cheerful Solar das Pedras hostel is a Portuguese building of thick rock that was built in the 19th century. It was completely restored however all its original characteristics were maintaned, preserving the old but with comfort. Hostel is located in the heart of historical centre. In the neighbourhood you find museums, historical buildings and churches. Projeto Reviver with a good nightlife is close by and so is Praia Grande bus terminal.
To get to the hostel from the airport or from the bus station, first you have to take a bus until Praca Deodora. Then you walk down Rua do Sol or Rua da Paz until Praca Joao Lisboa (about 10 blocks), go down Rua Humberto de Campos, turn left and you are there!
Solar das Pedras hostel is opened 24 hours. It has dormitory (4 people), individual, couple and family rooms and it's one of the cheapest places I've ever stayed in Brazil. Good breakfast is included. Hostel has a public telephone (nacional and internacional calls) and access to the internet. The staff is good source of useful info and the good thing is that you always meet nice people there, most of them Brazilian travellers.

Sofitel Sao Luis: On the beach side
It was a pity we had only one day in this hotel, between the trip back from Barreirinhas and the trip to southern Brazil...
Very comfortable rooms and facilities... we wish we had time to enjoy the pool.
Very good option if you intend to spend more time on the beaches...
