Opera de Arame
Built in a tube-like structure, the Opera de Arame (The Wire Opera House), from 1992, is a magical space that fit perfectly into its surroundings. Its metallic structures, which look like wire, have become an architectural mark in the city and nationwide. Opera de Arame was built in a record-breaking period of 75 days to host the frst edition of The Festival de Teatro de Curitiba (the city's theatre festival), which took place in 1992.
The shape and design were modeled on the Paris Opera House, but this structure is made entirely out of iron tubing, giving it a kind of see-through effect. It has three floors with the bottom being used frequently for art exhibitions. The ceiling is a wire mesh. There are 1.800 seats in the main theatre area and another 46 box seats.
Opera de Arame is situated in the middle of an urban green park Parque das Pedreiras, with a small lake in front, fed by a natural waterfall. Next to the Opera is Espaco Cultural Paulo Leminski, an out-door concert area which holds 50.000 people, where international bands, such as David Bowie and the Rolling Stones, have appeared. If you want a quick refreshment, there is a nice cafe by the lake.
It is open Tues-Sun 8am-10pm.
Curitiba - the European capital
Well, being a Curitibana myself I can honestly tell you that you can come and see the touristic Curitiba - and yes, you'll like it - but you should really spend some more time and really get to know the city. The nightlife is pretty good and there are many cultural events, such as the Theater Festival in March or the Photography Bienal (with expositions and courses) in July/August.
