Money matters Curitiba

by AndrewKo1218

I was just wondering, for those that live in Curitiba, how long will 10,000 dollars or around 20,000 to 23,000 reais with the current exchange rate, last me, a single traveler. I would like to live a rather comfortable life...nothing too lavish just a 1 br furnished apartment, monthly fees for jiu jitsu and muay thai at the academia ChuteBoxe, eating out a couple times a week, and going out on weekends? Also, I would like to go to some beach cities while I am there (Ilha do mel, Floripa, and any other nice beach towns). I would probably take a 1 week trip to a beach city every month/month and a half. Also, I would like to teach some english, but don't have a TEFL or any type of certification. Also, are there any big festas on the same scale as carnaval or oktoberfest(blumeneau) near curitiba from january until the time I would leave? Thanks in advance.

PS....I speak decent portuguese (4 semesters at college level and 4 prior trips to Rio de Janeiro)...would this help in me finding an english teaching job under-the-table since I would work without a visa.

I do not live in Curitiba nut the city where I live has more or less the same cost of living.

With 10k US you can live modest for one year and a little more, specially if you are making some extra bucks on teching english.

Figure that you can get by well travelling in Brazil with 30 dollars a day. Staying longer at the same place cut the daily costs.

Hi there!!!

I think you can stay here for a year or so with this amount of money, considering the expenses you´re planning to have.

But if you can find a job as an english teacher, you can stay forever!!! I have a friend who teaches english in São Paulo and she makes R$15,00 for every class (1 hr class).

In São Paulo, I´d say that it would be easy to find a job as a teacher. In Curitiba, I think it won´t be THAT EASY, but I think you can find it if you´re patient.

Good luck!!! Best regards,

Your plan sound like a great dream.....but, have you checked out the visa situation? Depending on the type of visa you have, or will apply for, from your country of residency, your plans may have to modified. For US citizens on a tourist visa, you will only be allowed 6 months in country, unless you apply for a Resident Visa. Curitiba is great and worth the effort! Good Luck!

Travel Tips for Curitiba

Ilha do Mel (Honey Island)

by mircaskirca

After doing sightseeing for a day or two, what would be more suitable than spending some time outside the city, on the secluded tropical beach, without the traffic noise... If you look for this, then Ilha do Mel is the place to go.

The island is a natural reserve and impresses with its scenery. It is an extraordinary place with no roads and cars, an ecological paradise. You can wander along miles and miles of quiet white sandy beaches, as Praia da Fortaleza, Praia do Farol das Conchas, Praia de Fora do Farol, Praia Grande and others. There are trails that run between hills, the view is stunning.

On Ilha do Mel not only nature is being preserved but history as well. You can visit Fortaleza Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres (Fort of Our Lady of the Pleasure), historical fortress built in 1767 and Farol das Conchas (Conchas Lighthouse) from 1872. Worth visiting is also Gruta das Encantadas (the Enchanted Grotto).

There are several pousadas (inns) to stay and restaurants where you can get fresh sea food. Nightlife is concentrated around weekends with live forro music and dancing.

The best way to get a boat to the island is Pontal do Sul.

Most Scenic Train Trip in Brazil

by glabah

Curitiba has a wide assortment of attractions and has many foreign visitors as supposedly it is an example of modern urban planning that works.

All of that may be the case, but since it is such a popular destination, I am not going to concentrate on all those standard-issue destinations. As with the other sections of my Virtual Tourist web pages, I will concentrate mostly on the train trip part of Curitiba.

Curitiba is the home of the Serra Verde Express, which operates from Curitiba eastward to Morretes and Paranagua. It is commonly regarded as one of the most scenic train trips in Brazil.

Please see my Must See Activities tips for Curitiba that I have created for more information on this train trip.

My Photos of this trip are divided into two sections: 2002 Trip and 2003 Trip that I have actaully included as part of my state of Parana pages.

Other Nearby Train Trip:
Another nearby train trip that might be of interest is about 2 hours away in Rio Negrinho in Santa Catarina.

"Curitiba's Famous Bus System"

This photo was taken from the Serra Verde Express outside Curitiba. As mentioned on my Parana page, Curitiba is known for these buses. These huge triple section buses are used instead of subways or metro lines around the city. However, Curitiba has found that they just don't have enough capacity in some areas.

Therefore, there is a Metro-style train system undergoing planning.
