About Race Issues in Curitiba
by tdemorsella
Curitiba seems like a beautiful place to live. My husband & I are considering moving our software company Curitiba.
Let me apologize if I unintentionally offend anyone. I have come to understand that many Brazilians are proud of the diversity of their society (and rightly so). However, I have seen a few studies and reports that indicate that my daughter and I may be not be accepted.
We are an interracial couple. My husband is Italian, Irish and Norwegian. I consider myself African American, however I guess Brazilians might consider me "mixed race" as I have an African, French, Native American, and Irish heritage. I am also concerned that our daughter might also encounter difficulties.
I realize that the US is famous for its racism, however we have lived in large urban and progressive areas in the East Coast, Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, so I have not regularly encountered much overt racism that is prevalent in other parts of the US. I am afraid, that I might encounter a different kind of racism than I accustomed to or prepared for.
As people who have lived, visited and worked in Curitiba could you perhaps give me your perspective of race issues there. Studies and reports alone, are not always the best way to access a situation.
My Concerns:
~Will my daughter receive fair treatment if she attends school there?
~Will people refuse to rent and sell property to us?
~We are planning on hiring up to 20 employees. Would the average worker be comfortable working for and accepting the authority of an African American woman?
~Will restaurants and other businesses refuse me as a customer.
Curitiba seems like such a progressive, forward thinking city. Is it possible that some of the things I have read are isolated incidents? If they are true, is it possible that things have improved in recent years. Or, do I need to understand that If I move to Curitaba, I might be exposing my daughter to unneeded pain and jeopardizing the growth of our business.
Thanks for sharing your views with me.

Hey, Tracy!
Let's hope some Brazilian can give you the really right information.
My niece and her husband lived in Curitiba for one year. They wanted to get the hell out of there. They moved to Florianópolis. Now, the problem may have been that they did not have any money. That's sad, but it does make a world of a difference.
People from Curitiba seem to be a bit too proud... They won't make any efforts speaking Spanish, for example, even if you are supposed to be just one market.
But I don't think things will be as difficult as you are afraid they would. I think Brazilians are nice for the most part; you just have to find the way to deal with them. And coming from the US, you may not care so much that they are cold in Curitiba.
My nephew stayed for two years. He might know more, if you want me to ask him. He just moved to Florianópolis too.
Good luck!
Lilian

I forgot the issue of racism. Yes, there's a lot of that. In Florianópolis they love you if you're blond (lots of German descendants).
But Lula (the president) has been encouraging all this equally opportunity thing and respect for all races. And it seems to be working to a reasonable extent.

Curitiba is a pleasant city to live and most people there are pretty nice and will show no racist feelings against you.
You will meet also some snobish people in Curitiba - it is a mostly white people place - but it is very unlike that you will face the same kinda of racism that you dela with in the US.
In Brazil, racism is more about your cultural and economic situation than about your colour skin.

Travel Tips for Curitiba
Curitiba is a city of parks....
by lichinga
Curitiba is a city of parks. Barreirinha, Sao Lourenço, Parque polones, Barigui, Passeio publico are very important green areas which allows public rest and open air activities for lots of people. Due to its unfair climate, 'curitibanos' love to run quickly outdoor, as soon as the Sun appears. The araucaria tree (Araucaria angustifolia) is one of the two most important and peculiar trees in this region of the world. The unique 'super-humid sub-temperate' climate featuring in Curitiba makes it possible for Araucaria and mate (Ilex paraguariensis) to grow in dense forests, which are exploited for logging (Araucaria) and for leaf brewing (mate). The picture shows an araucaria tree in the Barreirinha park, in the Northern side of Curitiba.
Restaurante Naturista (vegetarian restaurant!)
by VdV about Green Life
For vegetarians/vegans/health food lovers or those who just want a break from meat, have lunch at Green Life, a vegetarian restaurant. Located in the Centro area, Green Life offers a buffet lunch daily, including Sat. and Sun, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Green Life also features a mini-health food and health products store, where you can stock up on grains, snacks, some fresh produce, herbal soaps and lotions, etc. The lunch buffet offers a wonderful variety of salads, vegetables and hot entrees, including vegetarian feijoada, stroganoff, and other offerings. I enjoyed just getting blocks of tofu on spinach and greens, and drizzling a ginger-soy glaze on the top. Fresh suco (juice) is available as is soy milk.

pjallittle's new Curitiba Page
by pjallittle
Actually, I had already built a full page on Curitiba but placed it in the same section as Iguassu Falls. If I knew how, I would get transfer it over here but it will be easy enough to get to if you go to my other page. But as long as I am here, I will put a few things into place.
A fountain to start, it is a refreshing item.
