When I was there in 2000, we rented a car (with unlimited mileage, and drove there. It took one day to get most of the way there and we stayed at a hotel nearby. We drove the rest in the morning and saw the falls. In the afternoon we drove back half way, stayed at another hotel, and drove the rest the following morning.

There is a central bus station in Floripa. They are called rodoviaria('s). You can try a google search like this and maybe find something-->

-------
The bus ride from one side of Santa Catarina to the other takes about 14 - 16 hours, but I don't know the distance to Iguacu falls.

Driving was fun on the way there, but tiring by the time we were heading back. We went north to Curitiba, then west across Parana.

Don't know about flights though. Good luck!

Travel Tips for Foz do Iguaçu

Taking the road BR 277 from Foz to Ciudad del Este is a quite particular "adventure"... Close to the Friendship Bridge you will find the "real" Foz, not the tourist one. Big wholesalers and replacement parts shops go along the road, and all kind of peddlers weave among the cars, buses and trucks trying to sell everything... Closer to the bridge, the characters become more and more "peculiar"... then you begin to find the smugglers crossing the bridge.
The picture shows some of the peddlers having a rest under a shady tree.

Bus to Argentina's National Park

by Dabs

We took a taxi arranged by our hotel to get to the Argentine National Park, there is also the option to take the public bus. According to the guidebook, you take a Linha Internacional (Puerto Iguazu) bus to the terminal in Puerto Iguazu and then catch a yellow El Practico bus labeled Cataras to get to the Park. If you are not staying in Foz do Iguacu, you might check with your hotel whether or not the buses run along Av. Cataras, I suspect that you have to get into town in order to use this bus if you are staying at one of the resorts along Av. Cataras.

Itaipu Hydroelectric Powerplant

by realde14

The Itaipu hydroelectric powerplant is a joint venture between the countries of Paraguay and Brazil, and is the bigges of its kind in operation in the world, supplying 25% of Brazil's and 90% of Paraguay's electricity. It's worth a visit if you have an hour to kill, but unless you are a civil engineer, it is not particularly interesting.

The tour is geared toward mass tourism and people are shuttled around in dozen of buses.

Visitors Centre

by Willettsworld

The visitors centre which is located at the entrance to the National Park is quite good for a little visit before you take one of the double-decker buses to the waterfalls. There's a lot of useful information and pictures posted on the walls near the entrance plus there's also a souvenir shop.

Hidreletrica de Itaipu

by daevemanbrazil

Itapu Dam: the bigest Water Dam in the world! You can't miss it.

"According to the magazine "Popular Mechanics", 1995 edition, the seven greatest engineering feats "bear witness to the capacity of twentieth century human beings to attain their greatest destiny: the conquest of the impossible". Apart from Itaipu, the list also contains: the Golden Gate Bridge (USA); the Panama Canal, that links the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific; the Euro-Tunnel, that joins France and England beneath the English Channel; the North Sea Defence Works (Holland); the Empire State Building (USA); and the Tower of Canadian National (Canada)." - extracted from the Itaipu website.

The power plant is located in Parana River (Rio Parana), right between Brazil and Paraguay. Both countries built the Dam, but all power produced goes to Brazil (we buy the paraguayan share).

The Dam also created, if Im not mistaken, the bigest artificial lake in the world.

Last time I was in town, there was an Orquestral show at night, and my friends told me that was unforgettable (friday's night only, I still have to confirm if they are performing it).

Ill update this tip later, with more infos.
