Travel Tips for Porto Alegre

by catarata

- EAT BEEF. It´s absolutely great. It´s not just a topic, it´s real. It´s so close to Argentina that they share the real good quality in beefs.
- Go to FARROUPILHA PARK. Everyday you can find activities like concerts, and sound&light shows.
- Go to MORRO DA TV (Sta. Teresa) where you will see a splendid sight of Guaiba River. The rivers in Brazil are quite different from those in Europe. They are so huge. The Morro is full of favelas so that you absolutely must be quite careful and never go at night or alone.
- See the sundown at 'GASOMETRO'.
- Go to GRAMADO, which is about 130 km from P. Alegre. There is a National Park with a 65 m-high waterfall (Snail Waterfall, o CATARATA DO CARACOL). Quite beautiful. Gramado is a beautiful village, quite similar to any village in Austria. Everyone there is german descendant and if you can speak german you will have no problems there. If you want to eat there, you can do it at LE CHALET (Meat, cheese and chocolate Fondue´s rodizio for about $11. Very good quality and service). 'MINIWORLD' is not worthwhile. - SNAIL WATERFALL in Gramado
- Sight in MORRO DA TV. Splendid.
- RODIZIOS (free consumption for plain tarif).

clapp your hands

by pepples46

when you enter a House and can't see anyone around ..clapp your hands. try to get attention, but don't enter the house. this rule is definitly for the countryside, but used in the Cities too.
it is just good manner not to intrude.

I've already mentioned - Public Market and the boat trip on the river.
The public market is not at all touristy. The boat trip gives you an oportunity to see how the very rich and the very poor live in PoA. It lasts about an hour and a half and takes you around the small islands in the 'river', which is really an estuary. The sunset trip is the best time, for obvious reasons. There are also night time trips and Saturday or Sunday lunch, which is excellent ( a friend of mine does the catering!). No Guinness though.

THE CENTRAL AREA:DA PRAIA street, the main street in the center of the city..lots of shops, lots of people, funny things to see..
If you are a shoping hunter, try also the big malls:IGUATEMI,DA PRAIA STREET,BOURBON SHOPING CENTER,PRAIA DE BELAS SHOPING..they are very very big..
You can see in the central area very original-typical faces of the city and its people..
