Visit the area of Gramado and Canela. These are two absolutely beautiful towns on Porto Alegre natural elevations. Lots of diversely colored Hydrangeas give the place a wonderland appearance. Another strikingly beautiful town for its order and care in its landscaping is Novo Hamburgo, originally populated by Germans. Its people so warm and open to lead you anywhere you want to go! And the famous 'cachorros quentes' a brazilian version of the popular hotdog! Enjoy and share with us!

A day trip to Gramado / Canela has been mentioned before I think.
Also maybe a trip to the south of the city - Ipanema, for a nice sunset walk, or a bit further - Lami, about 30km south of the centre, also for a nice sunset walk, a little less crowded.

by Alless
It is a nice building ornamented in neoclassic style located at Montevideo Square, behind to the Central Public Market , the Porto Alegre's Old City Hall was designed by italian architect Carraro Colfosco, under strong influence of the Positivist doctrine. It displays atop the facade many allegorical statues, among them Economy, Education and Politics. Dates back from 1901. Recently totally restored (2003 ) adapting to various internal spaces for art exhibitions and for custody of Artistic Property of the Municipality of Porto Alegre, and then re-opened to the community.Nowadays it still houses Mayor and Vice-Mayor's offices, but also civic museums and art galleries.
The Palace of the Azoreans, its original name was tumbled as historical and cultural heritage of Porto Alegre in 1979.
At the next block behind there is the New City Hall, a taller and newer building, and an imposing and appealing one, designed after an austere Art Déco style, where function several city offices.
