Moving to Porto Alegre and in need of Immigration lawyer and some tips

by pbinder

We are a family of 5 and from Austria and plan to move to Porto Alegre soon and are now looking for an immigration lawyer based in Porto Alegre with good English or German to do our paperwork. Also we are looking for a local contact to help us to find a new home ( to rent ) and to find our way around schools and other paperwork and rules and regulations in Brazil . We would also like to know how save this city is and what we need to be carefull about, also what area is best to rent a house in ( save and near to good schools and in a nice green area with parks etc,.. ) Also general tips of what to bring and how to live in Brazil.

If anyone on this forum has spare time and would like to help us to settle in we could pay for a local guide,he /she could research some aspects of our move and
help us a lot,...

thanks

Philip

I believe your paperwork needs to be done before leaving Austria. Instead of contacting an immigration lawyer in Porto Alegre, I would get in touch with the Brazilian Embassy in Wien about this.

Travel Tips for Porto Alegre

by Alicia.

Visit the area of Gramado and Canela. These are two absolutely beautiful towns on Porto Alegre natural elevations. Lots of diversely colored Hydrangeas give the place a wonderland appearance. Another strikingly beautiful town for its order and care in its landscaping is Novo Hamburgo, originally populated by Germans. Its people so warm and open to lead you anywhere you want to go! And the famous 'cachorros quentes' a brazilian version of the popular hotdog! Enjoy and share with us!

The 'Anfiteatro Por do Sol' is the place where usually you will find free music shows that happens on our city. It is not difficult to find a music show, especially with brazilian music, on saturdays or sundays. This place is located on the banks of the Guaiba river and I am sure that you will enjoy this tip !

by apfear

A day trip to Gramado / Canela has been mentioned before I think.
Also maybe a trip to the south of the city - Ipanema, for a nice sunset walk, or a bit further - Lami, about 30km south of the centre, also for a nice sunset walk, a little less crowded.

Municipal Palace - The Old City Hall

by Alless

It is a nice building ornamented in neoclassic style located at Montevideo Square, behind to the Central Public Market , the Porto Alegre's Old City Hall was designed by italian architect Carraro Colfosco, under strong influence of the Positivist doctrine. It displays atop the facade many allegorical statues, among them Economy, Education and Politics. Dates back from 1901. Recently totally restored (2003 ) adapting to various internal spaces for art exhibitions and for custody of Artistic Property of the Municipality of Porto Alegre, and then re-opened to the community.Nowadays it still houses Mayor and Vice-Mayor's offices, but also civic museums and art galleries.
The Palace of the Azoreans, its original name was tumbled as historical and cultural heritage of Porto Alegre in 1979.
At the next block behind there is the New City Hall, a taller and newer building, and an imposing and appealing one, designed after an austere Art Déco style, where function several city offices.

Detail to the ceramic-made fountain,The Talavera de La Reina Fountain in front of Town Hall on the Montevideo Square, there is written : La Colonia Espanola Al Glorioso Pueblo Riograndense em su centenario Farroupilha 1835-1935
The Talavera de La Reina Fountain is a monument of the city of Porto Alegre. The fontain was a gift from the Spanish colony in 1935 on the occasion of the centenary of the Revolution Farroupilha is also a monument tumbled ,which, unfortunately, has already been depredated several times and no longer shows its ornamental fish in ceramicsThe city’s center milestone is also there on the Square (marco zero)

Centro Cultural Usina do Gasômetro - Cultural Centre
Locate on the shores of Guaíba,the building holds an old thermoelectric powerhouse of the city that was active from 1928 to 1974. Since 1991, it's one of the most important cultural centers of the State. It's chimney is 117m tall and serves as a visual reference throughout the city. The best day to visit the Gasômetro is on a Sunday afternoon, when there are people sunbathing and admiring the view.
