Tipping is a normal 10%...
by apfear
Tipping is a normal 10% usually included, if it's not it will say so on the bill. Depending on the degree of formality, when being introduced, you can greet the opposite sex (or girls can greet girls) with a light kiss on each cheek. Oh, and don't use sarcastic or dry type of British humour in jokes, it doesn't work with Brazilians and can sometimes offend.
Great Place for Musicians to Mingle
by PinkieShrimp
As a pianist, my fingers were itching to find a piano in my mother's home city, and the only place I could find one was in the historic downtown area. It is a six or seven-story large pink building with local knick-knacks sold on the first floor- things like cool colored glass rings. As you go up the levels, there are places where students study and have a view of the city. There are sound stages that you can request access to as well. On the very top floor there is a restaurant and bar with live music at night. The atmosphere was sophisticated, with a bit of old-world charm.
Asilo Padre Cacique (elderlies or people in need)
by Alless
In 1862 landed in Porto Alegre from Bahia,Father (Priest) Joaquim Cacique de Barros( was born in 1831 in Bahia State and died in 1907),better known as Padre Cacique, with a mission: to serve others, especially the elderly and underprivileged children. The fight for the children was the first stage of his career. In 1881, with donations, he began building the foundations of the Asylum of Begging on land donated by the then Emperor Dom Pedro II. The construction just stopped a few times and only opened in July 19, 1898.
This institution has been in activity for over 150 years and serves more than 160 elderly people in need, many of them who have been abandoned by their families. The shelter gives them dignity and comfort in the end of their lives.
In 1995, when the reconstruction started, supported by sponsors, the building was practically in ruins. It finished in 2008 after 15 years, with the efforts of the combined forces, all the rooms were rebuilt, from the walls and roofs to all bathrooms, laundry, kitchen, chapel, living rooms, bedrooms and the other areas of this important and impressive building of more than 5.000 square meters.
The building is divided into two wings - one for male residents , and other for female . The dining hall and other rooms are common to all.
What was a basement, today are video rooms, pharmacy, grocery warehouse, industrial laundry, beauty salon and a games room. The electrical wiring was replaced and the entire building was painted. There are two gardens, surrounded by galleries - a section of men and women , separated by a chapel.
The former aged “storage” is now a prized institution. It supports and promotes the socialization of these people who today have a suitable place where they can spend their days.
For the institution, any donation is welcome - as foodstuff, medicines, diapers and clothes.
Justice Palace ( Palacio da Justica )
by Alless
The Palace of Justice in Porto Alegre was the product of public competition in 1952 conducted by the Department of Public Works of the State Government of Rio Grande do Sul, organized by the IAB.( Institute of Brazilain Architects).Built in the Matriz Square (Praça da Matriz), between 1953 and 1968, the Justice Palace (Palácio da Justiça), project by Luis Fernando Corona and Carlos Maximiliano Fayet, is one of the most important buildings of contemporary Brazilian architecture in the State.
Moreover, throughout the years, some alterations and deformations had been made due to daily use and due to lack of occupation criteria. These alterations have changed the characteristics and also have suppressed important spaces of the building, as the restaurant located on the last floor. Fifty years after the Competition, in 1952, the remaining co-author, Carlos M. Fayet (1930-2007), was hired by the Tribunal de Justiça do Estado do RS to rehabilit the building to the current Justice. So, between 2002-2006, this work of rehabilitation was primordial to restore and complete the original project fifty-three years after its conception.
