Porto Alegre questions
I am thinking about leading a team of volunteers from Habitat for Humanity to help build homes for poor residents of Ilha Grande dos Marinheiros. My understanding is that Ilha Grande is close to Porto Alegre. Is that correct? How far apart are they?
I know nothing about Porto Alegre, so I need as much information about what the city is like, how easy it is to get around, how safe it is, what kinds of things there are to do, and whether there is anything nearby where we could take day trips (cultural sites, archeological sites, beaches, museums, beautiful nature, etc). Any help you can give me would be much appreciated. Thank you.
RE: Porto Alegre questions
I am going to Porto Alegre for the first time next week. I will let you know what I find. But the reason I write is that I would be interested in helping with the habitat for humanity down there. Sounds like fun. Please keep me posted.

Museu Júlio de Castilhos
To complete my joyride around Porto Alegre´s city center I visited this interesting and very informative museum, located a block away from the Cathedral.
It´s a historical museum that works in a house built in 1886. The house was bought by the Rio Grande Republican Party and donated to Júlio de Castilhos. He died here in 1903 during a surgery to remove a tumor from his throat. Two years later, also here, his wife commited suicide.
It´s the oldest museum in Rio Grande do Sul and has 6 permanent exhibitions: 1) Júlio de Castilhos´ private office, 2) Júlio de Castilhos´ bedroom, 3) Farroupilha Revolution, 4) Slavery, 5) Missions´ room and 6) Indians´ room.
Ufortunately all the information is in portuguese. But I think it´s possible to schedule a guided tour in english or spanish. I really recommend a visit to this museum. The entrance is free.
