Travel Tips for Cabo Frio

PIRATES,CORSAIRS AND PRIESTS..

by janaina

..the economy of the Portuguese settlements was based on Brazilian coastal woods, which was felled and shipped back to Europe.
Portuguese vessels were at the mercy of Dutch and French corsairs until 1615,when the Portuguese defeated their European foes, founded "Santa Helena De Cabo Frio",
and took the French built "Fort of San Matheus",to protect their trade.
In time, the Franciscans joined the sttlement and built the "Nossa Senhora Dos Anjos" convent.
They were followed by the jesuits at "Campo Novo" farm.
By the 1800's,with the Brazil woods satnds completely destroyed at the region, the economy was geared toward fishing, and recently, tourism, salt works and chemical industries.
Here the map of CF you can have at the central bus station..
