Sheraton Rio Hotel & Resort: Nice Resort Close to Ipanema
The Sheraton Rio Hotel and Resort is on a private beach about a 10 minute walk or 3 minute drive from Ipanema beach. The hotel has more amenities than the hotels in Ipanema and Copacabana but is not in the heart of the action, so you have to decide which is more important to you. The hotel offers a free shuttle to all points along the two beaches and all the way to the mall so it is easy to get anywhere you like.
The hotel has two nice swimming pool, access to a public beach during the day, tennis courts, a gym, massage services, and lots of other amenities. It also has 1 hour free internet per day for guests. It also has 4 restaurants to select from so you are not stuck for choice if you need to eat and do not want to travel into the main touristy areas. We found that the prices were not too much different to the restaurants in Ipanema and Copacabana.
We got a room on the Club level overlooking the ocean. The room was a nice size and had a balcony with great views of the beach and Ipanema. The room was very clean and everything well maintained. The only problem we had was that the convention rooms were on the level above ours and one day we could here the pitter patter of heels trip trap tropping above us quite loudly until about 11pm.
The breakfast is a little expensive at around $35 for the hot breakfast but the selection was very good... best if you can find a rate that include breakfast.
The hotel has a number of shops inside and a Greyline tour desk to book tours of the city. It is safer to book with them to guarantee your tour and their prices are not so different. The only difference is with Grey line you will probably take a large coach whereas others will take you in a small mini van. Again, depends on your preference. We booked with an outside agency and they never showed up so we kicked ourselves for not going with Greyline
Good sports facilties - tennis, pools, fitness center, aerobics classes,
Great ocean views with view of Ipanema
On the beach.

Sheraton Rio Hotel & Resort: The Famous Sheraton Rio
If you are looking to live in the lap of luxury, just outside the city limits of Rio, then look no further than the Sheraton Rio Hotel and Resort. When I first walked into the hotel, I figured this was nothing different than a standard business hotel, which was located beachfront. My view on the property changed rapidly after dropping off our bags and heading down to the poolside cafe.
Located on the lowest level of the hotel were two swimming pools, a wading area, and four distinctive restaurants. One was a Brazilian Rodizio, one a fine dining location, a third poolside bar, and the fourth a quick snack location serving great little pizzas and burgers. Although a bit on the expensive side, they all came in extremely handy when the weather was not conducive to Sarah and I venturing out into Rio for a wet evening.
The beds in the Rio were not the standard Sweet Sleeper by Sheraton, which I love... but our king bed was acceptable. The bed was sweetened by the fact that we were in a wonderful corner room which had a beautiful view of the ocean as well as the favela located up the hill from us.
Sarah did want to make sure to mention in this tip that there was one major problem with our suite upgrade. The suite we stayed in did not have a bathtub, which is the essential requirement for a hotel from Sarah's perspective.

Parthenon Queen Elizabeth: Great service!
We stayed with a friend who has a room at the Parthenon Queen Elizabeth. This is a great extended stay hotel. The service was incredible! We particularly liked Antonio, Bruno and Diego who worked at the front desk.
The hotel has a great pool, sauna and hot tub (that never really gets hot). The location was great. It was only half a block from Ipanema beach.
