Some more practical questions

by Snej

Hi Guys,

I have few more practical questions:
1.How much does it cost to go to ChurrascariaS and are there such with music, entertainment?
2. do you change the time at the end of March in Rio with a hour ahead, so is the time difference with Western europe 3 or 4 hours in April?

3. Around what time is the sunset in April?

Thanks a lot for the time to answer!

re: 1) Not all churrascarias are rodizios.
Not all rodizios are aimed at and priced for tourists and rich cariocas (like Porcao for example), so prices vary widely (and a decent one can be quite reasonable).
Quality does not always depend directly on price.

1) There's a chain of churrascarias called "Carretao", with branches in Ipanema (Praca Gal Osorio) and Copacabana, which charges about Rs$ 34 per head during the week, and a bit more at weekends. Good meat, and much else besides (but no music).
2) Brazil has already changed back to winter time (somewhat prematurely, in my view), so we're currently GMT -3. I think CET, like BST, moves forward on the last Sunday of March, so then we'll be GMT -4, CET -5.
3) Around 5/5.30, as far as I remember.

Thanks Robine, i appreciate alot your info, where then we can find place with music, not expensive to eat in the evening, i love Brazilian culsture and i wanted to meet Brazilian people having dinner and fun, i live in Belgium, here there are no erstaurants with music, but i come from Bulgaria and there it is usula thing that peolple go out to it, but always with entertainment and a lot of fun. I consider Brazil the same place, that's why i search for place with music and food, but not at all expensive one like "platforma"

As Robine indicates, the sunset time in April for Rio is approximately 5:30pm. For the exact sunrise/sunset times, select Rio and April at the following website:

Re: Some more practical questions

I agree, Carretao is the best Churrascaria value for the money. Arrive at 9pm on most any night and the noise and enthusiasm rivals any music.

Plataforma in Leblon offers the dinner followed by a samba show. It's a bit tourist but well worth combining the dinner with the music event.

Travel Tips for Rio de Janeiro

Beware of Rio Traffic and Other Daily Adventures

by tijuca

Rio is a huge city, so those of you from other huge cities will easily relate and feel at home. The rest of you take note.

All big cities have their daily rhythms, and Rio is no exception. Be alert to the open and obvious obstacles presented by construction, missing drain covers, breaks in the sidewalks, etc.

Do not assume the sidewalk in front of you will always be safe to walk along without looking out for your own safety. If you trip, slip, or fall, you're on your own! You can't sue anyone because you tripped over an over ripe "manga," or because you placed your foot into a perfectly visible hole in the sidewalk. Be alert to open, very visible, and obvious conditions around you.

In Arpoador, no barricades prevent you from walking right off the edge of the sidewalk and onto sharp rocks fifteen feet below. No warning signs are placed there, either. It is all VISIBLE, so keep your eyes open. Pay attention to what you are doing at all times.

North Americans have been lulled into a false sense of security at home. Lawsuits and liability insurance have resulted in an over-engineered environment. Rio is NOT Disneyland. Watch your kids. They may fall prey to big city life.

Traffic in Rio is unforgiving; WARN your kids of the dangers; do not let your kids run into streets. Watch them near high rise hotel windows. American kids have fallen from great heights to their deaths. Do not let your kids climb on walls with sharp metal spikes on top. Prevent them from throwing anything OUT of the windows on to people below. Hellooo!?! I could go on.

Deaths of North American kids resulted from the above activities. They could have been avoided.

We roamed all over Rio as kids without incident. Rio is a wonderful place. Please stay alert at all times. Saudades . . . e isso que a gente sente. . . .

A day away from the beach

by chris_i79

Take a day or an afternoon and wonder through the city center. Rio is full of beautiful churches and other old buildings that make it very interesting tour. And it is a great opportunity to try as many different flavors from the juice bars as you can!

Ahh Just to add, also in a walk between Botafogo and Flamengo beach, it is the best spot to take pictures of this magnificent mountain of rio which is also a world's Landmark, THE SUGAR LOAF!;)

Wear Brazilian bikini, don't need beach towel

by ScubaBrz

Everybody wears the little bikinis in Rio. You can buy them on the beach, or, more cheaply in a smaller town if you take side trips.
I wish I had done this, even tho I wasn't sure the first day, because I got enough of a tan that I would have had two big white areas on my backside if I had put on a little bikini the next day!!!!
After an afternoon of being on the beach, I realized that you're not expected to have a perfect body - not at all.
Plus, the vendors will figure out you're American and single you out to try to get you to buy their snacks, sodas, blankets, bikinis, earrings, tote bags, etc.
Besides, everyone wears a 'canga' = kung- gah, which is like a sarong, so, you can wrap it around like a skirt unless you're laying on it on the beach. Oh, and no one brings towels - just lay on your canga (bring a chamois so that you can dry off & not get your canga or car seats wet)

As you know Oscar Niemeyer was the great creator of Brasilia, our National Capital, he was the one who also designed our Museum in Niteroi, the Modern Art Museum or simply the Museu de Artes Contemporaneas, and in the Museum's Aniverssary he was there, still working with the age of 96 years old and still very clever and kind, and speaking a great french!;)

My friends from Montreal were there and emt him!;)
