Nice base to start
It is maybe not the best hotel, but it is a good basis to start the discovering of the Zona Sul in Rio de Janeiro. It is situated directly on the border between Copacabana and Ipanema and the Surf Mekka Aproador is directly in the vicinity! The rooms cost round about 50$ and have everything you need in a normal standard. The personal is friendly and it is possible to communicate in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Atlantis Copacabana Hotel
I stayed here during Carnaval 2005 as it was one of the cheapest around during this time. Location for me was ideal as it's on a quiet street inbetween Copacabana and Ipanema beaches in the area called Arpoador so you get both beaches about a 5 min walk away. Overall the hotel wasn't that bad, with good service and clean public areas downstairs. The room I had was clean, fairly OK in size with a fridge, TV etc. The room decor was a little on the dated size and a bit shabby. They could do with a little brightening up but it served it's purpose. The bathroom was a little narrow but was OK.
On the roof there's a small swimming pool which was nice to cool off in, some seats and sun loungers and a bar which didn't have anybody there whenever I was there.
Breakfast is served in the room behind reception and is fairly small so getting a table can sometimes be a problem. Breakfast itself was adequate with scrambled egg, sausages, breads/rolls, good choice of fruit, jams, juices and coffee & tea. Nothing special but did the job which is how I would sum up the hotel.

Perfect Hotel for a First or Second Visit
I stay here on my first trip to Rio. Having travelled internationally, I knew not to expect double beds (there were singles, as in most foreign countries) and standard service. Location was the most important factor here. It's steps away from Copacabana beach, yet still far enough away that noise isnt a factor. Up on the roof is the magnificent Christ statue looking down at you as you sun yourself and cool out in the water. The surrounding mountains were the attention getters and little else.
The hotel's wonderful staff, especially Sebastiao were courteous when they heard even a slight bit of Portugues spoken and extremely helpful. Since returning to Rio and making it a second home, I've secured an apartment, but will continue to send first timers to this hotel for a pleasant experience. After all, you're in Rio for Rio, not for the hotel. This one will provide a backdrop for your trip so that you'll not remember anything horrible about your hotel adventure, rather, all the wonderful things that make up Brasil.
It's inexpensive. It's close enough to the water. You'll feel like a local walking along the cobblestone streets and you'll see how Cariocas really live.
Unique Quality: Great Service, Location between Copa & Ipanema, Quiet Street

Atlantis Copacabana - a nice suggestion
This Hotel was a nice surprise to me, it is a "Three stars" according to brazilian government classification, but it has many assets at an extremelly attractive tariff. Daily Rate is BRL 180 (around USD 62-65) including city taxes and bereakfast. Hotel has a nice swimming pool, sauna and a solarium in the roof, clean and simple rooms, excellent showers!!! and id it is conveniently located between Arpoador and Copacabana beaches, two blocks from each other. I also would like to mention the kindness of all staff!!

Great location
Probably the best thing about this hotel is that it's on the borderline between Ipanema and Copacabana. You're literally a couple blocks from three beaches (Copacabana, Ipanema and Apoador). They have internet access in the lobby, although it's overpriced, and a helpful front desk staff, most of whom can speak a little English.
Free breakfast is included in the price of the room and each room has at least one comfortable bed, warm showers, cable TV, air conditioning, a stocked fridge (costs extra if you indulge) and a closet with a safe. My view was pretty lame (toward the back of the hotel), but then again I didn't spend much time here, so who cares?
Unique Quality: Single rooms are listed at $55 USD, but I paid around $40, so be sure to negotiate.
Atlantis Copacabana is located two block from the beach at the border between Copacabana and ipanema. Its not fancy or luxurious, but comfortable and well maintained. The staff are very friendly and accomodating. At $50 a night ( if booked on line thru Ipacom Travel) the price is right. Rooftop has a small pool and sauna with a great view of Ipanema. A buffet breakfast is included in the cost of the room, and offers fresh tropical fruits, eggs, sausage and a vareity of breads, with a choice of several juices and/or coffee to drink. In a couple of minutes you can be on the beach.
Location, Price and Service Rio Winner
by rickleegray about Atlantis Copacabana
This hotel was budget priced but had a great location, good service, hearty breakfast and help with tours. We enjoyed the hotel, especially the service from Pedro, Eledir, Sebastian and Gilza. Quiet neighborhood with a fun local cafe on the corner. The location was 2 blocks from the beach.
In Rio
by acemj about Atlantis Copacabana
There are plenty of good places to stay in Rio, but you'll probably want to stay in Zona Sul, either in Copacabana or Ipanema since this is the safest area and it's closest to most of the primary attractions.
I ended up at this hotel, which is nothing spectacular, but has an unbeatable location. A few blocks in one direction and you're sunning yourself on Copacabana with Sugar Loaf Mountain in view and a few blocks the other way and you're strolling the beach at Ipanema.

by manosouthafrica
ola,
Would somebody pleaz help. I'm almost out of time for my Rio trip and need some info. 1. Can I book a hotel for Rio through Hotels.com, and how safe and reliable is it. 2. How can I get to my hotel at about midnight from GIG airport. and 3. Between and Atlantis Copacabana and Rio Copa Hotel which would you recommend, or something similar.
many thanks Mano

Hi, I can only help you with 2nd question; when you arrive in GIG take a prepaid cab in the airport, you can pay with credit card; it's a fixed price for destination ( Copacabana) and the price should be around 20 US$ ( 60 reais ); the most traditional ones are COOTRAMO and TRANSCOOPASS. It's what I do when I arrive in GIG to get home. I hope you'll enjoy your stay in Rio, Heloisa

Hi Heloisa, and thanks a stack for your prompt answer. I sure will follow that. Chow for now.

It would be cheaper to use a yellow cab right through the doors of the airport. It is the standard yellow cabs for RIo Brazil. The cost should be about 30 reais. Tell him to take the tunnel and not the scenic route. There should be no traffic anyway.
Hotels.com charges a commission. Try calling the hotel direct it might be cheaper. The RIO Copa Hotel is good.

1. Yes, hotels.com is reliable.
2. I'd take the bus (about US$2). It'll drop you off very near most hotels.
3. I'd recommend you look at the Acapulco Copacabana Hotel. It's recently refurbished; has large nicely air conditioned rooms; and is (a) cheaper than Atlantis Copacabana and (b) nearer Av Atlantica -- and the beach -- than Rio Copa.
