I didn't stay here but I know the owners and have visited. It is one of the nicest hostels I have ever seen! When I visited the hostel had organized it so that a bunch of the people staying there could go to Maracana together. It's very social, close to the beach, and beautiful.
Has a pool, cool rooms, a big kitchen, serves a good breakfast (I did eat there), is very social, has multi-lingual people working there (big plus), can organize any outing for you! The owners are also very social in Rio and know all the best places to go! there is no curfew, a BBQ, airport pick up, and the list goes on. It's more like a hotel with dorm rooms! If you're looking for a great beachfront location, but not wanting to spend over $100 for a hotel room in Rio, then the Arpoador Inn is a good value. Although the rooms can be a little musty, and very basic, the location can't be beat. Pay the extra $30 USD for a beachfront room--overlooking Arpoador Point and Ipanema boardwalk/beach. The view and the sound of the surf makes the extra expense worth it. Service was just o.k. We asked for an iron and ironing board on a late Saturday afternoon (to get dressed to attend a wedding), and the front desk staff gave us some lame excuse about the "ironing facilities" being closed by 4pm each day. Also, there was some confusion over hotel tax--they wanted that paid in cash, rather than on the credit card. (?) Finally, do NOT buy the Internet card for the Internet service they have at the hotel. It is quite costly, and the computers are EXTREMELY slow--you're better off finding an Internet cafe somewhere else.
PRIME location--right on the beach...Arpoador is the midpoint where Copacabana and Ipanema meet. There is NO street or long avenida between the hotel and the beach--the picture you see here was taken right outside our room!...the location gives it a restful feel since all you have to do is step outside and you are on the boardwalk/beach. No having do dodge cars on the busy avenida to cross the street on the beach like you do with the hotels in Copacabana! Climb the rocks at Arpoador Point for stunning views....and nice sunrise/sunset. Renting an apartment was an ideal option for me, since I wanted so badly a place for just myself that isn't so madly expensive as any Rio hotel. Besides I didn't mind in doing cleaning or cooking by myself (especially if I could save some bucks by doing so). Strongly recommend checking out the classified ads of newspapers and other popular Brazilians sites, espcially those marked as "aluguel de temporada" or "apartamento por temporada" (seasonal renting for no more than 90 days). You will find several options according to location, price and number of people staying in it. However, you may need a bit of Portuguese or Spanish skills to read them, landlords not necessarily are bilinguals :( That's how I found my cozy, little apartment in Rua Rainha Elizabeth, two blocks from Copacabana beach and three blocks from Ipanema, at US$400 (+ US$50 deposit returnable at the end of the stay) for one month. Good deal, isn't it?
The most useful classified sections that I found were: - Jornal do Brasil http://www.keero.com.br/site/categ.php?c=11 (go to "apartamentos aluguel" or renting apartments) - O Globo Online http://www.oglobo.com.br - Yahoo Imoveis http://yahoo.imovelweb.com.br (go to the "pesquisar imovel" section (to search the apartment). Then, in the three columns, pick in the first column as regiao (region) RJ-Zona Sul, if you want to be in Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, BArra, Niteroi, Botafogo or surroundings). Then, in the second column, instead of "lançamentos" pick "temporada" (season renting), and finally pick "apartamentos" (apartments). For those of you who still search for some youth hostels there are two new ones opened in Rio de Janeiro...one in Santa Teresa district, the other one in Ipanema. On a previous trip to Brazil, I stayed in Everest Rio (ipanema) and Rio Atlantica (Copacabana). Both were pretty nice, but Ipanema Plaza was by far my favorite place to stay. It's conveniently located (near the beach, restos, and shops) and the rooms were modern and clean. There's also a great roof top pool, from which the views of Corcovado and Ipanema Beach were glorious. To top things off, the staff at Ipanema Plaza were extremely friendly and accommodating - helping us plan tours and allowing us to check out late to accommodate our late day flight. I would definitely recommend staying in the Ipanema area over Copacabana because it feels a lot safer and less touristy. And above all, I would recommend Ipanema Plaza for the service, location, price and cleanliness. I will definitely stay here again.
