by NGCH2

Any recommendation for a tour operator?

I would highly recommend doing the trip on your own. Things are fairly easy to arrange, especially with some help from the forum :-) and a good guidebook. If you deign to stay in private rooms in hostels, you can meet lots of fellow travellers. But brush up on your Portuguese. Travelling solo gives you some great opportunities to meet Brazilians, the true treasure of travelling there!

Travel Tips for Rio de Janeiro

Northern Rio

by el_ruso

North of Centro appears to be a 'low income area' - the contrast of lifestyle with the south is simply incredible. You will pass through this area on the way to and from the airport. You will also pass a sewage plant - be sure to ask your driver to close windows b/c the smell is very strong. You will realize that you are in the third world.

Banks

by chris_i79

When I was in Rio I experienced problems locating banks that were part of the Plus bank network. I did not experience this in any other country in South America and for that matter in any other Brazilian cities as well. Banco du Brazil was the only bank that consistently had the Plus symbol on its machines. If you are going to Rio be sure to bring a couple of different types of plastic on a couple different networks to make it easier to access you funds.

Weekend Food

by racheljapi

After the beach on Saturdays or Sundays most Brazilians go to a BBQ place called a churrascaria. Go and get meat, beans (black), rice, and farofa. If you've never had farofa, I personally like to mix my rice, beans, and farofa up. Don't mix it too much because you still want to taste the individual flavors. Man, I'm hungry! Try Caravelas on Visconde de Caravelas in Botafogo.

Do not take photos in the Cemitario João Batista (John the Baptist Cemetary), as they will make you leave. The photography was excellent, and I did not take any photos of graves or names, nor was anyone there, as it was Carnaval, and everyone was busy doing Carnaval things. This cemetary is in the heart of the city, near Humaitá and Botafogo, adjacent to the Túnel Velho. The base of this statue bears the word, SAUDADE, a very important Brazilian concept, which can be characterized as a 'nostalgic longing'. It is said that those who come to Brazil and stay for a while will never lose this feeling of saudade.
