Decent Option

The Mango Tree was full after I came back from touring Brazil so I wanted to stay in a new place in Ipanema. The staff recommended this hostel because it is new. I ended up staying in the ten person dorm room (a bit cramped) but it did the job for the price. The 4 and 6 bed dorms looked much nicer and the doubles looked great. They are brand new (opened in February 2009) so there is some construction going on here but it is fine. The staff were super helpful and you cant beat the location (only two blocks from the beach). The security was great as well. I recommend this place.

Unique Quality: The TV room is pretty sweet with tons of English satellite channels, a nice pool and bar and the location is key. Only drawback would be that travellers have to pay for internet and the ten bed dorms are a bit cramped. The airport transport at 40 Reals is totally reasonable and one of the cheapest I heard of (they got a hook up with a local guy). Overall, good experience.

by dani_kova

Hi, how much would it cost to rent apartment for 2 people in Rio on the beach (Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon)for at least one month starting mid December? Any suggestions of the links for renting would be more than welcome! Can´t wait to get to Brasil!
thanx Dani

You will not be disappointed in Rio. Here is a luxury studio aptmts in Copa, for $1,400 per month. However, consider that you will be there over New Years, which by the way is the best place on the planet for NYE!!!

If you have not booked yet you may have a problem due, again, to NYE. Advise to do it NOW!!

Here is what you can expect on New Years Eve. Two million people on the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. Put this panorama on full screen, crank up the sound and let it revolve a full circle.

If you want to meet up with some cool locals, here is the site of a fellow VTer, who is a pretty cool guy. He has some really local tour stuff, that you will not find anywhere else. The second link is his VT page:

Remember to BOOK THE APARTMENT NOW!! Good luck!

....there are cheaper apartments available, but I gave you the high price so you have a comparison. However they are likely to go up in price for New Years.

Go to a futbol (pronounced...

by scarm

Go to a futbol (pronounced foo-chee-bol), or soccer game at Maracanã Stadium. Maracanã, and don't forget the squiggle on the name of it, and when you pronounce the name, be sure to make a nasal sound at the ending ã. This picture is from the top of Corcovado, which allows a unique prospective on the stadium. This is the reportedly the largest stadium in the world, at about 160,000 capacity, but due to safety reasons, only about 110,000 is used regularly. Best to go to see a Flamengo-Vasco game, as this is the biggest rivalry in the city. Do not take a car there, but instead take a taxi, and hopefully have a pre-arranged place for the driver to pick you up afterwards. Be sure to sit in a cadeira especial (special chair), in order to insulate yourself from the riff-raff. There are always fights in the upper stands of the less expensive seats, and there are instances of gunfire outside of the stadium at times. Best not to wear a shirt from one of the rival teams, as you risk a confrontation. These people are very serious about their soccer. Also, do not sit in the lower deck in a seat that is not covered by the upper deck, as the fans on the upper deck tend to hurl all sorts of fluids at those who are unprotected. The sound of the croud at the matches is absolutely deafening, the emotions in the place are at a fever pitch, and the show is incredible, as the fans begin chanting well before the game, and continue throughout, and all in perfect unison. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE.

Sunday Walk in Ipanema

by brownfox

I really admire the CARIOCAS (locals) for having a specific day for the family to enjoy...which is Sunday. The major event during this day is walking and taking a stroll along Ipanema beachwalk. Some jog, some stroll with baby carriages, some just relaxes as people walked by..I did most of the latter.

Super crazy jobs

by Groentje

In Rio, and elsewhere in Brasil as well, people tend to do the craziest of jobs, just to earn that little bit of extra cash. Just some I found a bit, euhm, extravagant:
- selling items on the beach, running around on the beach dragging plaques with: flagues, umbrellas, sun glasses, fish, coco nuts, sun lotions, ice cream, ... It looked really heavy to wear all the time! Don't be afraid to buy anything, though... I think those people can really use the money.
- parking people, standing by the side of the road, asking money for parking (please DO give them money, otherwise you're not sure your car will be safe..)
- traffic guide at the gas station: these guide the cars into the right queue (!), and then guide them back on the road
- queue regulator at a shop: a bit the same as above, but this time in a regular shop
- elevator person: pushing (people's) buttons all day long, and staying friendly
- guard at someone else's house, just waiting for the to leave/come back...
As you can see, not the best of jobs, but still, it earns them a (extra) living...
