California Othon
Does anybody have any information about the California Othon on Copacabana Beach? My wife and I and another couple will be staying there for a week beginning this weekend. Is it close to popular nightclubs and restaurants? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

It's a pretty standard (which, in Rio, means comfortable), older 3* hotel on the ocean front, about two thirds of the way from Leme to Ipanama (i.e. nearer Ipanama, which is good). Well located for restaurants etc.

Well, I´d say it is not the best standard one to saty... There are good hotels in Ipanema and Copacabana, I think this one is a very old one and not that good. Location is good thought. Try also Orla Hotel, Merlin Hotel, or Everest Hotel. The official site from Hospitality Industry in Rio could also help you. It´s http://www.riodejaneirohotel.com.br/guia/regiao.asp?regiao=206 . Then, chose one and tell me and I´ll try to help you out.

Also check aout Rio Internacional. To help you better, if you want beach fron in Copacabana, try to find "Avenida Atlantica", it´s the name of the street that is beach front. And in Ipanema and Leblon, try Av Delfim Moreira and Vieira Souto.

Is Copacabana better than Ipanema ? I have booked Hotel California Othon Classic (US$60 a night for a Delux Room ) is it a good hotel ? (I have to cancel before this monday) Any suggestions ?

Your hotel is perfectly decent, and well-priced, but Ipanema is undoubtedtly superior. Should you wish to investigate the alternatives, look at the Praia Ipanema and Sol Ipanema.

I will be traveling to Rio in late July and staying at the California Othon Classic. Is there alot of public transportation? Should I try to learn some portugese before I go, or do alot of people speak english? feel free to email me!

Hey!
It wouldn't hurt to know a little bit of Portuguese, even if it's just stuff like please and thank you (por favor and obrigada for girls and obrigado for boys). Public transportation is great. I doubt you'll ever run into a bus driver who speaks english but the signs on the front of the bus will tell you were it goes (generally). Taxis are also very reasonably priced. Be aware at night when in Copacabana. Well, be aware at night in any big city in any area, but also in Copa.

Buses are everywhere, and very cheap, though some of the drivers are insane. Of course some Portuguese would be an advantage - the man in the street won't normally speak English.

I wish I had learned a little more before I went, but got along fine. It helps to know a little Spanish (from my experience it did). Have fun.
