Met some fun people
One of the highlights of my trip to Rio de Janeiro was meeting some great people. From going to a soccer game with a couple VTers to hanging (literally) with some Canadians I met at my hotel, my visit was made all the more enjoyable because of the company I kept. This is a picture of my new Canadian friends Kelly and his sister Laurie with the "runway" behind them.
Payphones-they don't accept coins!
The payphone system is very different in Brazil. While they used to use tokens now they use phone cards specifically for payphones. It sounds very strange at first but it's a lot more convenient then carrying a bunch of coins. You can purchase this card at almost all of the newsstands and/or many bars. I think you can also get them at some groceries. If you do need one it should not be hard to find, Brazilians carry them around like we Americans carry around credit cards. Each card is good for a predetermined number of calls, usually 20 or 40. The digital display on the phone shows how many calls you have left. Regular phones in Rio have seven-digit numbers, and celular phones have 8.
For calls within Greater Rio and Niteroi, dial the number directly. If you want to reverse the charges (collect call), dial 9 before the phone number. For long distance domestic calls first dial 021, then the city code, followed by the phone number. To call São Paulo, for instance, you would dial 021-11-***-****. To reverse the charges dial 9021-11-***-****.
To make international phone calls you have to start with 0021, followed by the country code, area code, and phone number. To call London, for instance, you would dial 0021-44-171-***-****. If you do not know your country code (a lot of people don't) call 000-333 for assistance of an international operator. They speak English, and are very helpful.
If you are calling Rio de Janeiro from abroad, you have to dial your international access number, followed by the country code 55, the city code 21, and phone number. If you are in New York, for instance, you would dial 11-55-21-***-****. Call your local operator for more details.

June 5th, 2006
Those who have seen it before, come back for more!
For first timers, the impact is unforgetable!
The parade of Samba Schools in Rio is one of the greatest shows on earth!
Each year the samba schools choose an issue from where the scenery, song, costums and floats will be based on.
When the current carnaval is gone, the members imediately start to prepare the school for next year parade!
The parade, what happens in Sambodromo, starts around 8pm thru the night.
In the Sambodromo, what is divided in sections,sections7 and 9 are the stands reserved for tourists and the tickets can be bought at travel agencies.
Other sections, covered and uncovered boxes tickets must be bought well in advance!!!
Many samba schools aloud tourists,or not members,to take part on their parade,I heard in some hotels, the concierge can help you find the costums and samba schools where you can be the star yourself!!!
Each samba school has around 4.000 members on its parade,10 floats and they must finish the Sambodromo way in 80 minutes!
The samba schools have their own fan club, just like soccer clubs, and the parade, apart of a show itself,is a competition between the schools.
Various aspects are judged:theme song,evolution,drum band,dancers,harmony,
dance-master and standart-bearer,among others. On the following wednesday, the carnaval champion is announced,a title disputed just like soccer national league!!
The samba schools are also didvided in 2 categories:first group, the biggest and famous, and second group, the smallers schools.
Sometimes, because of the total amount of points,a samba school can jump from 2nd to 1st group, the contrary is rare!!
Unfortunately,I don't have any of those famous almost nacked girls costums pictures to show you,for the obvious reason I don't care about it,and because as much as I remember myself as a big girl,my carnavals are as far away as possible from Rio!
So here we go with a picture of the Sugar Loaf view from Copacabana's Fort!
Traveling to places close to Rio
Places you can easily check out on a day trip or for the weekend:
To name a few. Buzios is better during the weekend. Petropolis is a historical town. Cabo Frio is similar to Buzios but a bit less developed. You can also go to Ouro Preto. It's a 7 to 8 hr bus trip. There are night buses that leave around 10p and get you there around 6a. Great city!
