Travel Tips for Rio de Janeiro

The beaches of Rio

by chris_i79

Rio has a certain energy or vibe that is special. The beaches are one of the main attractions of the city and there are many beautiful ones to choose from. What I really liked about Rio's beaches was the variety of things one could buy while on the beach. My list included: sunglasses, towels, jewellery, tatoos, beer, pop, t shirts, sarongs, bikinis, shrimp, sausages (cooked in front of you in portable bbqs),watches, kites, wooden carvings....( i will add more as I remember)

Great views

by acemj

I've never seen a more beautiful physical setting than Rio. Fortunately, the weather cleared just enough for me to spend one day at both Sugar Loaf and Corcovado, Rio's two most famous mountains. Those two spots, plus hang gliding (paragliding to some) over the city allowed me to see the city from multiple viewpoints. No matter where you're looking from, this place is spectacular.

FLAMENGO

by RafaelTheSecond

It is one of the oldest district of Rio de Janeiro, during the colonial times, the Dutch settled in this area, and the portuguese named the place as the FLEMISH AREA..or in our language, Flamengo. Centuries later it was one of the richest and classy neighborhood in the city, the high society lived in Flamengo, then the city had grown, and it is now a very nice middle class district of Rio. In this neighborhood you can visit the impressive and enormous Flamengo's Park.

If you are using your Camera, be always aware of some thiefs, better walk in groups or with someone who knows the city very much, specially in the limtis of Botafogo and Flamengo.

Carnaval: Tickets

by Willettsworld

I bought my carnaval tickets before I left home on the internet at http://arara.biz. There's some very useful information on this website about everything you need to know about the Carnaval, purchasing tickets and ticket prices. This is another good page: http://rio-carnival.net/samba_parade/samba_parade_tickets.php. The price of the tickets vary depending on where you sit in the Sambadrome. The Sambadrome is divided into different sectors where each one offers slightly different views (kind of like going to a football match). The higher the price, the better the view. After paying (which is done via Paypal), your tickets are then delivered to your hotel on days to suit you. Easy!

Futebol!!! Don't...

by lukec

Futebol!!! Don't forget..Cariocas live, love and die for it. Visiting Maracana is a must for any football lover and even for those who aren't for the sheer magnitude of the place. It's the biggest stadium in the world and cariocas make it a mighty arena, where their cheering screams, drums and other instruments reverberate in your chests. The hostel we stayed at (Copacabana Praia) organised a trip to Maracana during a footbal match, so we joined in. Unless you're really self confident, that's a better thing to do, because Maracana is not located in the nicest neighbourhood of the town. If you do go on your own, there's a metro station nearby, but be alert for suspicious characters.
