Great Upgrade from Basic Hotel Service!
After a mishap with what seemed like an acetone cleaning session at another hotel, we were moved to this 5 star. It took the luxe factor up a bit from the Atlantis Copacabana hotel, with bigger beds (2 smaller beds pushed together actually equal a KING sized bed here) and in-room TVs that work without fail. The views were spectacular, the staff quiet and anticipating your every need, seemingly appearing when they crossed your mind. They were very accomodating and even room service appears quickly. This is a can't-go-wrong hotel.
Unique Quality: The rooftop pool is astoundingly modern & sleek.
There are bathtubs (a hot & often unavailable commodity in Brasil) in this hotel.
Rooms are larger than normal, even on standard rooms.

Inexpensive Tip in Copacabana
Located in front of Bairro Peixoto Square, a refuge of tranquillity inside Copacabana. Cheaper than most hotels and with a family like atmosphere.
Not to be confused with the Copacabana Praia Hotel, this hotel offers excellent inexpensive spacious suites in a former residential building. The catch? Location. The hotel is a good 15- to 20-minute walk from the beach and situated away from Copacabana's restaurant and nightlife scene. But for budget-minded travelers who don't mind a short walk or cab ride, it offers spacious lodgings for up to six people with a full kitchen and sitting room at just R$50 (US$25) a night. The nicest apartments are the ones overlooking the pleasant neighborhood park out front.
Unique Quality: The Copa Praia Hotel has 57 large apartments (about 45m2), almost the double size of a regular hotel apartment. The room facilities include bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. All apartments have refrigerator, stove, telephone, ceiling fan and air conditioners. The rooms can accommodate up to six guests.They can be rent by day, or with special prices for month rents. The Hotel has automated reception yet.

Hotels in Ipanema?
I've decided Ipanema is the place I will be staying in Rio. Can anyone give good recommendations for hotels there, preferably withing a decent price range (in USD dollars)

I recommend the 4* Praia Ipanema, on the ocean front, which is moderately priced for its location. If this is too expensive there's also the Arpoador Inn, pretty basic but wonderfully located, right on the beach.

You can also check out the Ipanema Inn, which is budget as well as the Sol Ipanema and Ipanema Plaza. I've gone to Rio a couple of times already and will be going for New Year's with http://www.toursgonewild.com. I think they may have some hotels in Ipanema and can also hook you up w/ the best nightlife in Rio.

While not quite in Ipanema, another mid price place (about 150R) is the Copacabana Praia Hotel (not to be confused with the hostel) on Rua Francisco Otoviano. It sits in Arpoador - about 2 blocks from Copacabana beach one way, and 2 blocks from Ipanema beach the other way. I loved the location when I stayed there.
