I am Brazilian and live in the United States. I visit Rio de Janeiro every 3 years. This used to be my hotel of choice, when it was named Luxor Regente Copacabana.
During my last two trips to Brazil in the last 6 years I opted for another hotel, after being confronted with the ridiculous prices the new owner (Golden Tulip, a dutch owner) has imposed. This hotel does not command the rate they are currently seeking (over $276 per night)! I believe they are trying to compare themselves to the Rio Othon Palace or even the Mariott. They are very far from even coming close to the caliber of those two hotels.
My opinion is that, if you are willing to pay $276 per night at this hotel, you will be better served and less frustraded by paying $315 per night at the Rio Othon or $400 per night at the Mariott.
As long as there are suckers willing to pay $276 per night at the Golden Tulip, they will continue to charge that much for a stay.
I, for one, knowing what the Golden Tulip is like will not pay that musch to stay there.
Have a great, safe stay in Rio and enjoy yourself.

Situated in front of Copacabana beach, close to Ipanema and Leblon Beaches, in walking distance from excellent shopping, restaurants, nightclubs and all attractions.

I traveled with two girlfriends and we had a very standard room. The hotel was kind enough to add a third twin bed to the room and we were able to manage quite well. Our room did not have a view of any kind, but it was always clean and the bathroom was easy to share.
The staff at this hotel is outstanding! We especially enjoyed meeting Carla and Giselle, the two girls that are their just to help crazy tourists like us. We got lots of tips on where to go, especially for our big night on the town for my friend's birthday.
The breakfast was delicious, most of all the coffee. We stayed so busy each day and it was a joy to return to such a nice hotel every evening.

Located at the Arpoador end of Copacabana beach, this hotel looks rather unimposing from the outside and also on the inside as well. There's nothing fancy about it, it just does it's job. Service is friendly and polite, rooms are good and fairly spacious with very good sized bathrooms. Rooms have usual 3 star features such as TV, safe, Air-con, mini-bar etc but the room I had had no view at all but then, of course, you have to pay extra for that.
There's a roof top swimming pool and terrace bar along with a very good restaurant which served an excellent plentiful breakfast and also served good buffet dinners at very good prices. All-in-all a nice beachside hotel that doesn't cost as much as others that offer the same.

OK, after all we'd heard about staying in Ipanema rather than Copacabana I have to say Copa was totally fine. I never felt unsafe and this hotel had everything you'd want minus decor. And I'm picky as heck about decor, so it was fine.
The people at the desk were MORE THAN helpful. I can't even begin to tell you how invaluable they were to us.
The breakfast each morning was good too. NOT GREAT, but good. Tons of fruit, cheese, breads, pastries, various cold cuts, various juices, coffee and tea.
Please hit the roof top the moment you check in- make sure you have your swim suit on too! It's lovely up there. WHAT A VIEW! And you can order yourself a caipirinhia as early as you like and they don't bat an eye at all. Then take a dip in the small yet completely refreshing pool.
I would definitely recommend this hotel.
Unique Quality: I think I touched on most of this above. However, they do have a nice little Internet set up for guests for a minimal fee. And the restaurant is open for all three meals. And if you're desperate to get your hands on some H. Stern jewelry there's a small shop in the lobby.

Not very inspiering from the outside, this hotel is nice and plesant inside. The room is specious, and the staff is efficient and helpfull. The only downside are the clastrophobic coridors and staicases.
The restaurant is good and plesant with great veriety in the morning and dinner buffet.
The pool on the top is small, but who needs a pool in copacabana
Unique Quality: The dinner buffet is very recomended - for that price - about 25 R, you want get such a variety and quality in any restaurant in the street.
Try fresh squeezed orange juice at the bar by the pool on the top of the hotel and enjoy the beautifull vie of the beach

This place was not exactly the nicest place I've stayed, but it was good enough. The staff was really nice and everyone at the front desk spoke really good english. The hotel seemed old, but I get the impression that is just how it is in Rio. The upstairs pool is not really a pool, but there is a nice view and the bar made the best Caipirinha we had in Rio. This hotel was located on Coppacabana beach, but in walking distance to Ipanema.
My travel agent is giving us a package with the Luxor Regente Hotel, is it good? we wanted to upgrade to Le meridien but it is too expensive...another choice is the Augusto Copacaban Hotel which is the cheapest...pls somebody help...thanks
We've been in Luxor Regente a month ago. (see my Rio page). We enjoyed it very much. The rooms are speciouse and nice, Breakfast is great, and the have a buffet dinner with a large veriety of everything, for a very reasonable price. I can realy recomend it
Luxor is not bad for the buck. Its pretty decent hotel and somewhat in the middle of copa. The Le Meridian is way off at the beginning of the Ave atlantica. Near the tunnel. If you want to grab food or go shopping you would have to long walk it or take the bus. Near Luxor everything is pretty much within walking distance. hope this helps.
I've also stayed in the Luxor Regente, and agree that it's well-located and perfectly adequate. In Rio, it's not as if you'll be spending a lot of time in your hotel room!
The best option in Rio de Janeiro is ACE Hostels and they also have a hostel in São Paulo.
They´ll charge you U$10 or U$ 12 per night. If you stay there for 4 nights, the 5º night is for free.
It´s cheap, clean, fun, safe and the location is in Botafogo beach, besides Copacabana, in a very safe area.
They can help you in everything you need and in the reception you´ll find Vania (the MO) that take care and she´ll give all the informations that you´ll need at Rio.

The Luxor Regente is a good, clean hotel. Although the rooms are small, by American standards, but they were very nice. We especially liked the location because it was a short walk to Ipenema, where we liked to hang out.
The dinner buffet is very recomended - for that price - about 25 R, you want get such a variety and quality in any restaurant in the street.
