Last day of cruise - need advice

by wilhelm45

Our ship docks at 7am in Rio on the last day of our cruise March 18th but our plane doesn’t leave until 9:15pm from Galeao International Airport. Rather than pick up a taxi at the dock, do some sightseeing then later find another taxi to go to the airport, we thought it might be a good idea to have a taxi meet us at the dock, drive us around to a number of tourist sights then take us to the airport, allowing sufficient time to get through security. We would like to find out what a ballpark cost estimate would be and how practical our idea is. We would want to make sure we hire a reputable guide/taxi. We are not quite sure exactly how long getting off the ship will take and, to complicate matters, we don’t have a cell phone to call someone. We are open to any other suggestion people might have to spend the day and get to the airport on time. Thank you.

Either hire a professional Rio tour guide for the day (check hints by poster RafaelTheSecond, now a tour guide and/or email me on this site for his contact info) or take your bags by taxi to the in-town airport Santos Dumont to use the baggage storage (guarda volumes) for the day. From that central location, you can get a regular taxi to take you to the first sight you'd like to see. I suggest either Corcovado (the Christ statue) or Sugarloaf if it is a sunny morning. Tat way you don't have to pay the taxi to wait while you take your time up above. You could then a drink/lunch by the beach in Copacabana or Ipanema and go back (nearer to Santos Dumont)to stroll downtown to see the historic buildings (stop at Confeitaria Colombo for a snack).
You'd need to be at the GIG by 7ish, so leave Santos Dumont with the luggage at 6ish.

I don't believe your ship cruise do not pay attention at client communications on board. So I am listing below some links concerned in Rio's bilingual taxi-drivers. You may choose one them and deal with them also:

Hi - I'd suggest taking a look at www.cruisecritic.com - go to Boards then Ports of Call. You'll likely find specific recommendations there and/or can post your question there. Have a great cruise!

COPACABANA - HOW TO UNDERSTAND IT!

by marcbrazil

Locals call the beach as COPA, so it is better for you to get used to refer to Copacabana in a very private way...IT IS NOT COPACABANA, JUST SAY "COPA"

The whole beach is divided in 4 parts:

LEME - Because of a fort with the same name, in the right corner of the beach

MERIDIEN - It is a huge hotel that changed name, now it is IBERO STAR and it is located on the Atlantica Avenue corner with a very important avenue which connects Copacabana to the Bay Area of the city in Botafogo. This avenue is called PRINCESA ISABEL.

SIQUEIRA CAMPOS - Very busy street which concentrates the best part of the district for shopping (ATTENTION GIRLS!!!), it is also lcoated in the middle of the beach and very close to the famous COPACABANA PALACE.

POSTO SEIS - Most exclusive part of Copacabana, here everything is more ellegant and calmer than the rest of Copacabana. Sometimes Copacabana is not only a simple neighborhood of Rio, sometimes Copacabana turns into a huge urban city..But at Posto Seis you still can live without hurry, you forget a little bit about stressing life and by the end of the afternoon you can have a nice coffe in a nice café at Copacabana Fortress, enjoying the view of the whole beach and also the rocks of Diabo beach abd Arpoador!

For those who stays in Copa, it is always better to be located from the Copacabana palace to the end of the beach at POSTO SEIS.

THE CITY WORKS

by RafaelTheSecond

It is one of the most modern bridge in the world, it is a huge one but still very short for the population of Rio and Niteroi, in the peak hour the bridge is unbearable, but if something works worng in your car and you have a problem, you have total free assistance. In the case, my car over heated, and they came to me in 15 minutes. Phillip my german friend was with me and guess what, it was my birthday!!! :)

September 28th, 2005 The real name of the bridge is PONTE COSTA E SILVA, it links Rio and Niteroi and this is the main road to the main highways of the State!

Leave the big bastard bikinis at home

by uvaspy

Don't wear those granny pants at the beach. Wear a brazilian or thong bikini bottom. Keep your top on, they don't go topless here.

Don't worry if you do not have the bod to strut a skimpy bottom. Grandmas wear these tiny things too.

Remember... people got no shame.

Rules of Flip Flops

by racheljapi

First things first, go buy some Havaianas. They are VERY comfortable! So wear them when you go to and from the beach but not out on the town. Locals don't wear flip flops like we Americans do (or at least we Californians). Wearing them to get something to eat or anything just after the beach is fine but otherwise (if you want to blend in more) put on some cute shoes for girls or cool sneakers for guys.
