Carnaval-how much???

by sezzy100

Hi everyone,
a friend and I are planning a trip to Brasil. We are thinking to go either December or for Carnaval in February.
I would like to know how much more expensive everything will be during carnaval time. I have looked at the cost of airline tickets, and they are about the same regardless of the dates.
We were thinking of arriving two weeks before carnaval. Are the prices more during the weeks before carnaval or do they only go up when the festival actually starts?
If anyone can give me a comparison of prices, or other helpful information, then that would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Also, would anyone recommend against 2 young females traveling alone together around Rio and other cities in Brasil.

it´s a lot more expensive during carneval times.
hotels and hostels are generally 4-5 times the normal price and in rio they tend to require that you book for the whole carneval period which is 6 days.
if you look in to the websites of places that offers accomodation then you will most likely find that they have speacial "carneval package".

Prices go up for high season (maybe Nov-Mar). Prices go way up for Carnaval, maybe 3x normal high season. Accomodation for Carnaval is sold in packages, in Rio usually of 5 (or 6) nights. If you have not already booked for 2010, you may have few good options left, since places start booking around July. You can get specific prices from looking at most hotel or hostel websites. Most advertise prices for Carnaval and Reveillon (NYE) packages. Travellers shouldn't have problems if they use some street smarts, and no specific problems due to being female.

Hey I was acutally wondering the same thing. I will be volunteering in Rio for a few months beggining in January, and I have heard it is much more expensive. The hostel price goes up but just go online to hostelz .com and try that. my sister will be flying down to Rio to visit me for Carnival and then travel on her own for a few weeks and I was also wondering how safe it is for a girl to travel Brazil or anywhere else alone in South America

The only really dramatic price hikes are for hotels, which demand a 4 or 5 night "package" at rates much higher than normal, but only during Carnaval itself. Two weeks before is still high season, but nothing extortionate.

Young females travelling alone - not a problem, as long as you're sensible (as everywhere).

Hi, hotels and hostels do get a lot more expensive during carnival - you might find it is a little cheaper to rent an apartment, but it's still pricey. if the budget it tight you should look at areas like Botafogo, Catete and Flamengo, as accommodation is cheaper here than by the beaches. As for being two girls together - you'll be fine but just be prepared to be constantly swatting away the men! If you stay in hostels you'll meet lots of other travelers anyway! There is some good info on Carnival here: http://www.nileguide.com/destination/rio-de-janeiro/things-to-do/carnival-in-rio/402290
let me know if you need any more advice!

Travel Tips for Rio de Janeiro

Rio is the most sensual,...

by Luis_Alberto

Rio is the most sensual, erotic city, I have ever seen. The place seems to vibrate, in harmony with its people. Carnival in Rio is only once a year, however the music of Samba, seems to reverberate, throughout the whole year in this City. A night in the town. There are just as many nightclubs and discos to keep you busy for a month. People are spontaneously friendly and outgoing here. Seriously, I met people in Rio, much easely than any other major city, I have ever been. There is an aptitude of 'live and let live'.

Money matters

by Dabs

We used both our ATM and credit card (Visa) with no problems in Rio. We found several banks that accepted our ATM card on Av. NS de Copacabana, one street back from Av. Atlantica. I think the closest ones were Banco Popular and HSBC, not every machine at those locations accepted our card so look for the machines that have your cards logo on it.

I've seen suggestions that you not carry large sums of cash in Rio, we only took out R$200 at a time and I put my larger bills in a separate location from the smaller bills so that I was not flashing a large wad of cash. A lot of places can't make change so try to break larger bills at places like the supermarket or larger restaurants when you have the opportunity.

The local soft drink

by Dabs

I noticed the green cans of Guarana in the supermarket and remember reading that I should try it but I couldn't remember exactly why although I was pretty sure it was caffeinated (it contains guaranine, similar to caffeine), one of the things I need to get going in the morning. I found myself ordering this quite a bit in Rio, something different from our US selection of soft drinks and it didn't seem like it was eating away at the lining of my stomach like most soft drinks. I'm not sure what to liken it to, perhaps a bit like flat ginger ale?

Turns out that Guarana (pronounced gwa-ra-naa) is a berry that grows in Venezuela and Brazil, the name comes from the Guarani tribe that lives in Brazil. Some people think it has healing powers.

The most popular brand is from Brazil, Guarana Antarctica, which comes in both regular and light, and Coca Cola's version called Kuat seems to get quite a bit less shelf space. My husband preferred the Kuat, you can set up your own "Guarana" challenge while there (remember those old Pepsi challenge commercials?) and see which one you like better.

Don't call yourself "chicken"

by CLillard

When trying to cross a busy road, I made the mistake of calling myself a chicken. In America, when you say that somebody is a chicken, you mean that they are too scared to do something. If you call someone a 'galinha' or a chicken in Brazil, it means that the person sleeps around.

NORMAL THINGS CAN ALSO BE A PLEASURE!

by RafaelTheSecond

When my friends come to visit I am always there to give them a little help. Winston from Jamaica and living in Miami right now, comes often to Niteroi to see his house in the beach, and for sure we have to go to the supermarket!;)

Carrefour is one of the main supermarkets in the city!;)
