New Years in Rio de Janeiro

by Urbanomad

Hi,

I will be visiting Rio de Janeiro for New Years. Can anyone tell us what usually happens on New Years in Rio? What is traditional? Are there festivals... fireworks? What happens?

Thanks!

Michael

There are big fireworks at Copacabana beach and parties all over town.

New Years in Rio, is second only to Carnival. Copacabana beach will have more than a million people cramming the area. Book NOW! I like it better, - and it has been a while since a tour I headed was there over newyears. It has only gotten more popular, more crazy and more festive. If you want to be in the middle of it, obviously booking a hotel on Copacabana Beach would do it, but doubtful that you can secure rooms there now, - although I really do not know this for sure. Like I said, - do it NOW!

Checked out the link given by bahiana77. What a great panorama shot!! Thanks, I am keeping this one.

It appears that the crowd has grown to two million, - quite bit more than when I was there. It surely gives you an idea of what you are in for. Also consider that a great number of the hordes decending upon the city, also want to spend time seeing the sights. Be prepared!

i think copacabana is THE place to spend new years eve in the whole world.
and remember that the tradition is that you dress in white on new years eve in brazil.

I was on Copacabana Beach from 11:00pm (2300) to 1:00am (0100) as 2001 turned into 2002. Within my line-of-sight there were no moe than 200 people and a half-dozen little shrines burrowed, candles lit, into the sand. The sparsity of people was due, I assume, to my location: I was opposite the Othon Palace Hotel. The action -- and, presumably, the crowd -- must have been further north, toward the Copacabana Palace and Meridian Hotels.

My location did provide a marvelous view of the fireworks and of a huge cruise ship that came close to shore to give its passengers a view of those pyrotechnics.

Copacabana beach.
Remember:
- wearing white;
- making a wish while jumping seven small waves, in the sea;
- bring a champagne or spumanti to toss at the beach.

New Year in Rio has to be the best New Year´s Eve party in the world! Get to the beach early, bring a bottle, and don´t forget to wear white! You will have a fantastic time, guaranteed. Travel Tips for Rio de Janeiro

You must do the Pao de Azucar...

by MichaelJohn

You must do the Pao de Azucar (Sugar Loaf) as it affords great views and you feel like 007 in Moonraker when he fought with Jaws. Hope you are not afraid of heights. going to the World Club Champioships of football and seeing Vasco da Gama and Corinthians battle for the championship with 75,000 Brazilians screaming and singing and dancing in the stands.

Take the Santa Teresa trip...

by Yseut

Take the Santa Teresa trip with the old train. The view is absolutely beautiful.
When the train is arrived you can take a walk in the lovely streets, look at the beautiful houses. Out of time !
You alos have to go to the Corcovado (take the train, the station is adorable) and the Pan de Açul for the views.
And don't forget to get your kids to the Jardim Botanico... I guess that my best memory of Rio is walking by the beaches (Ipanema and Leblon) early in the morning when it's not too hot, and there are not too many people. The atmosphere is great, peaceful

Talk like a Carioca !

by Ipanema_Princess

Here is a little "survival essential vocabulary " in Rio. Cariocas have a really fun way to speak, with a lot of exageration and slang (called "giria").

Some basics
- Bom Dia / Boa Noite : Hello (day or night)
- Oi ! : Hi !
- Obrigado : Thank you
- Tudo bem ? or Beleza ? : How are you ?

Some words you may here a lot
- cachaça : alcool the Caïpirinha is made with
- praia : beach
- barzinho : small bar
- cerveja / chopp : bear
- cara : man
- gato / gata : cute guy / girl
- camelo : street vendor
- flanelinha : people that ask you money to watch on your car. Better to give them.
- Zona Sul : the area of the beaches of Rio (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon...)
- grana : money
- legal ! : great ! cool !
- fala serio ! : you're kidding me ? (more or less) You must say "Fala seeeeeeerio ! "
- novela : very important soap opera
- pra caralho / caramba : a lot

Football Football Football

by Groentje

When you've been in Rio, you know what I mean. Everyone is completely mental when it comes to football! There were several football pitches opposite of my hotel, and I don't believe I looked out my window once that I did not see anyone playing football! Elder people play against each other, whole teams just compete, ... It was fun to just go and look at how they play.
Even at night, or when it was raining, I always saw teams playing against each other...
Don't miss the Maracaña either!

PLAYING IN THE NATURE

by RafaelTheSecond

We are lucky to have such a generous nature, and the vegetation in Arraial do Cabo is a little bit dry, and everyone would remind Mexico for sure!

Here we can play in marvelous places!;)

It is good to share with you the joy of my mother and my cousing descovering a new place!

They were in ARRAIAL DO CABO!
