Christ the Redeemer

by robine

Not a question, but a piece of information for anyone planning to come to Rio. Following the recent heavy rain, and consequent disastrous flooding and landslips, the statue of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado is currently inaccessible, and will continue to be so for the next 4-6 months.

Re: Christ the Redeemer

by xymmot

Do they think it will collapse because of the rain?

Re: Christ the Redeemer

by bahiana77

No, but the road and the railway going up the mountain were blocked in places by debris and fallen trees. The statue itself is undergoing maintenance that started before the rains and has scaffolding around it anyway that was scheduled to be there for a couple of months.

There's also a smaller Cristo in Ilheus, hometown of the late Jorge Amado.

Thanks alot. I will be in Rio in a month, great to know. I was thinking about taking a tour but if it is closed, no need for the tour.

Re: Christ the Redeemer

by NedHopkins

It's likely to be closed even longer than planned. Some hoodlums climbed the scaffolding and defaced the statue with ugly graffiti. The mayor of Rio de Janeiro has vowed to prosecute them -- if they're found -- though it's a wonder they were not struck dead. In any event, cleaning will now add days or weeks to the closing.

Travel Tips for Rio de Janeiro

Indo ao Centro - Going Donwtown

by dargains

If intend to go downtown Rio, go in a weekday during the comercial hours, in my opionion the best time for a turist to be there are on weekdays from 10 A.M. up to 3 or 4 P.M., because rush hour only starts at 5 P.M., and at this time there a lot of people on the street as well as some policeman. Prefer to use to subway, it fast, clean and safe, and be carefull with your camera, watch out for little kids that may try to mug you

FISHERMEN IN ACTION IN NITEROI

by RafaelTheSecond

When my friends come to Rio, certainly make them watch very closerly how we live in our daily lives, and we decided to go to Jurujuba, our biggest fish colony in Niteroi and we could take a real genuine tour in our Bay Coast, and the swedish kids could fish just like the locals!;)

But the mood in the sea was not for fishing and we enjoyed the landscape and had lots of fun!;)

January 8th, 2005 We really had a nice day in Niteroi! :)

A PLANT CALLED " COW FEET"

by RafaelTheSecond

There is a tree very common in Rio called PÉ DE VACA, which literally means "cow feet", anyway, the tree is very shady and tthe flowers are simply gorgeous. I took a picture of this flower, and I would love to know if you like it!

ACTUALLY THAT FLOWER RECALLS ME A GREAT FRIEND OF MINE HERE AT VT, DEECAT FROM ILLINOIS!

,,mais cheio de graca...

by mangueirense

...Due to the lot of immigrants Brazil had you will find all sort of women in Brazil: black (morena), brunette and blond-haired (loira) ones..what you prefer is your choice there!

If you come here you will see the most of beautiful women at the beaches all around or inside the bars, discotheques and shoppings. As brazilian women in general treat their body's well (by doing lot's of sports or musculation, and of course "maquiagem") you can see lot's of women in shorts or biquinis at the beach..or in short little nothings called "fio dental" in Brazil.
This is the very famous sort of biquini you will see nothing but all ! ;-) LOL

Body Beautiful Culture

by Groentje

Another BBC :-)
Everyone is trying to stay fit in Rio, and look as beautiful as humanly possible. Don't try to find topless women on the beaches; you'll find a lot of topless men, but no women. I think this is great (no I'm not gay) as it adds to the mystery :-)
But enough about that!
Sports being played are:
- beach soccer
- beach volley
- foot volley
- racketball
- jogging
- ...
People playing sports are:
- young people from 8-25
- 'normal' people from 26-65
- elder people from 66-80
Seriously, everyone's joining! I enjoyed seeing whole families playing football amongst each other, fathers and sons trying to beat others and having fun, ...
