Holland America's Choice
This hotel was picked by the cruise line which expedited transfers from the airport and to the boat. It is slightly off the beaten path, but is still on an inviting beach in Sao Conrado. To get to the main beaches of Leblon. Ipanema, and Copacabana you must travel around one of the hills that make Rio de Janeiro so visually striking. If Rio is your primary destination, you may be better off to choose a place closer to the action.
Unique Quality: As I said this hotel caters to those embarking upon a cruise and does offer many excursions. The best of which is the dinner and show package of a Brasilian Steakhouse and a history of Brasilian dance culture. You can also go to Corcovado.

Beautiful beach 10 min south of Copacabana
Great 5 star hotel, beach much cleaner than Copacabana! Rooms are immaculate with balconies and marble bathrooms. Very comfy bed! I recommend this hotel if you can get a special price. Normal rates are about US$450 per night but we got a sea view room with balcony and king bed for US$220 on www.hotelclub.com.au Would not pay full price unless i was rich. Better off at Copacabana Palace Hotel for US$550 for those kind of prices!
Unique Quality: Two large pools, one with waterfall and the other with a swim up bar. Also one kiddie pool. Several restaurants. Excellent staff. Hotel has free shuttle bus to Copacabana Beach and Ipanema Beach about 5 times per day. Saves on taxi fares. If you are not rich, do not book an airport transfer at the Car Service desk in the lobby. It would be US$80 for up to 4 people in a sedan booked through the hotel. They discourage you from booking a taxi instead of their car service. If you take your luggage just across the street from the hotel, there are taxis just hanging out and you can negotiate them to take you to the international airport for only 55 reals (US$22) ... BIG savings!!

A bit dilapidated when I visited...
I was in 2001 for a conference here. Sao Corado is a bit off the nicest beaches (Ipanema, Barra de Tijuca), but distances in Rio are not that far... When I visited, I found the hotel not so new... hope they have since remodeled it... Even the hotels in my country El Salvador - which is not so touristically developed - are more luxe and would have been better for carrying a conference ... but then, this is Rio de Janeiro! So my complain stops here...

Wonderful view of beach
I spent six days at the Hotel. The hotel is located in Sao Conrado Beach.
The rooms were nice, spacious and had a wonderful view to the beach. It had a small TV, small fridge and the beds were confortable.
Most of the Staff were very nice, except one of the receptionist called Danielle.
Although I consider myself a local in Rio( i lived there for a year) I decided that I wanted to get a map of the city, so I could situated myself a little bit more. When I asked for the guide she pretended that she didnt listened to me, then when I asked again, she said that they didnt have any map avaliable. Turn to be not true, because later another member of the staff was kind enough to look for one for me.
I also experienced similar experience by the pool. I spent 2 hours by the poor and none of the staff came to get a food order. I ended up having luch at the restaurant.
Next time I go to Rio, I will choose another Hotel.
The sheraton of Barra is without any doubt much better than the intercontinental in terms of services.
I think the intercontinental is a hotel of 5 stars with a staff of 2 stars. I will never stay there again
Unique Quality: The view of the beach is really amazing, but in Ipanema the view is much better.

A nice place away from the beach crowds!
The facilities and services were superb. The staff was attentive and friendy. The Intercontinenal Rio lives up to its luxury resort hotel rating.
Unique Quality: It is secluded in quiet Sao Cronado, which is about 15 to 2 minutes by cab from the beach crowds of Copacabana, and Ipanema. But its close proxmity to the Gavea golf course is what I valued most. Also, it has a nice large pool.

A Bit Far From the Action, But Worth It
Great place to stay with friendly people and a fancy shopping mall next door.
INCREDIBLE ocean views from all rooms.
Not cheap by Brazilian standards, but cheaper than just about any decent hotel in the States.
Unique Quality: Unlike the hotels in Copacabana or Ipanema, this hotel has plenty of space. That means they have tennis courts, THREE swimming pools (one with in-water seating) and a very relaxing atmosphere. A trio plays Brazilian samba and pagode poolside in the afternoons.
Avoid the cramped spaces of Copa, spend the extra ten minutes (and US$ 3.00) in a taxi and enjoy a wonderful hotel.
