A cool garden spot in bustling Ipanema
This hostel was a great deal in an ideal location. I recommend a private room, and room K if it is available. This is an upstairs corner room that seems to be the best room in the place. One can leave the window open all day and night w/o worrying anyone will come in. Plus it has a good vantage to what's going on in the pool and bar downstairs -but all the rooms open onto the courtyard so that isn't a big deal.
The room was fine, nice size, nice bold paint on the walls and a comfortable bed. Rustic, indonesian looking furniture. The shared bathroom was kinda yuck. It is cleaned every morning, but it's tired. There is a bit of mold in the grout in the shower. I wore my flip flops when showering. This is the worst part of this place. Otherwise it's a super cute and very cool hostel. If you can get past the shower I'd recommend this to the budget minded. It is a hostel after all. The people are friendly. The courtyard and appointed community rooms are super cute. There is an adorable garden and veranda out front.
The breakfast is allright. The juices aren't fresh squeezed, but the bread, cheese, ham, cakes, coffee seem to be the same as I've found in more expensive places.

I stayed at a hostel called Ipanema Becha House, a very nice building with a backyard and a pool. It has a kitchen that can be used by guests.

Hostel just 3 blocks from Ipanema Beach
Had a private room which was quite expensive for hostel but room was cute and very homey. All rooms have shared facilities and during my stay the house was full and showers were busy (even ran out of water). Breakfast was nice. And hostels bar is a good place to kick off the evening & meet other travellers.
I'd go back there...

Great hostel! With pool!
I didn't stay here but I know the owners and have visited. It is one of the nicest hostels I have ever seen! When I visited the hostel had organized it so that a bunch of the people staying there could go to Maracana together. It's very social, close to the beach, and beautiful.
Unique Quality: Has a pool, cool rooms, a big kitchen, serves a good breakfast (I did eat there), is very social, has multi-lingual people working there (big plus), can organize any outing for you! The owners are also very social in Rio and know all the best places to go! there is no curfew, a BBQ, airport pick up, and the list goes on. It's more like a hotel with dorm rooms!

i've been there on a party once.. and the place seems nice! it has an excellent location, a pool and a nice courtyard. the people working there were cariocas, so they might help you out with whatever you need. i think the private rooms don't have private baths, but i'm not sure.
