Copacabana is a "reserve" area for tourist.
Is the only place saftly in Rio.
Day and nght!

if you want to stay by the beach then i wouyld recommend either ipanema or leblon.
safe areas with a good vibe and away from the sex tourist scene of copacabana.

i personally prefer the center of rio and places like lapa or santa teresa.
i am goiung to rio for a few weeks in june/july and i will most likely stay in lapa as i like the vibe there.

I'd go for Ipanema - safe, trendiest beach (Posto 9), lots of hotels (including several on the seafront) and restaurants, midway between Copa and Leblon.

Thank you, I'm looking at staying at Atlantis Copacabana which lies in between Ipanema and Copacabana. It has gotten decent reviews and I like the location too.

I'd never heard of, nor noticed, this hotel, but it's quite close to my flat, and I can confirm that the location is excellent.

thank you. I found the hotel in Lonely Planet guide. Checked their reviews and they were ok, so why not! thanks again for all your help.

Santa Teresa and Leblon are quite different areas. While Santa Teresa is in the fringe of downtown, badly served of taxis and shops, and with absolutely no banks or post office branches, Leblon is in the south zone, facing the ocean and with lots of shops, many banks and services that make it the most expensive neighborhood in Rio.Enjoy your stay.

Travel Tips for Rio de Janeiro

Do you need a Visa ???

by dvideira

Travelers coming from Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and other neighboring countries can enter with a simple photo I.D.

If you are coming from a country which requires Visas from brazilian people, you will probably need to get one to. This is not a revenge... just what is called "reciprocity rules" in the world of diplomacy. That is not supposed to be a big deal. Just make sure you apply for it.
Most people go for the regular tourist visa, which allows you to stay for as long as three months (you can renew if necessary). There is also a transit visa, good for ten days only. Both are easy to get.

There is a link when you can check if you need it or not.
List of Countries

In case you are going to need it, there is a list of things you will need to get it:

. passport valid for at least an additional 6 months
. copy of round-trip ticket
. 1 recent passport-size photo (color or B&W)
. some kind of proof you have spending money to bring
. certificate proving you took the right vaccines, depending on where you are coming from, or going to
. a visa application form (available at the Brazilian consulate or embassy).

Life´s a beach

by skullcrusher

What I enjoy most about Rio is relaxing on the beaches, sipping water from a big coconut in one hand, and spending time talking with and playing a round of fresco-ball with the Cariocas. Plus, meeting fellow travelers who've come from all over the world to do the same thing.

I visit Copacabana quite a bit because I know some great locals who hangout there. But for actually jumping in the water I like the beaches at Ipanema and Barra da Tijuca much better. At these places the water is calmer (though they can have a viscious undertow) and for some reason the water at Barra & Ipa always feel a few degrees warmer than at Copa.

As I've mentioned in other posts, you can get a pretty good workout for free at the many exercise stations along Rio's beaches. Assuming you don't mind mixing it up with the locals, the best fitness station I've found so far is located on Praia do Diabo (Devil Beach). It is a small beach located between Copacabana and Arpoador beaches, ..... beside Arpoador rock. The Academia here has improvished free weights and at times the "views" can be very nice indeed.

A big misconception that many people seem to have is the belief that you will see many naked people on the beaches. This is simply not true - nude beaches are not that popular in Brazil and the few women you see hanging out on the beaches in Copacabana or Ipanema will either be European tourists or Brazilian ``Garotas de Programas´´ (ie, hookers). For your average Brazilian, skimpy beach-wear is much more the norm - it is said that Rio is where the string bikini was born ...... and those outfits leave very little for the imagination.

Que vista linda!!

IN RIO EVERY ONE LIKES RELAXING

by RafaelTheSecond

Not only people love lying under the sun....sun bathing is also famous among the turtles in the Botanic Gardens. the place is full of life and you should not miss one of the most interesting attractions in the city. A visit to the Botanic Garden, which in Portuguese we say, Jardim Botanico will really impress you!

Accomodation

by Groentje

People tend to live in appartments in Zona Sul, the richer part of Rio. Please note that I'm not talking about the favelas here!
I noticed that houses are quite small, and that there are guards at every house or parking. Seriously, there really are guards everywhere! The houses are very well protected (with gates and fences surrounding each house), also very isolated, which guarantees a lot of privacy. It may be a bit sad to be isolated like that, but I guess that's just the way it goes over there.
