Nice hotel with so so location!

I stayed at the Merlin Copacabana on my first trip to Rio de Janeiro, some years ago. The hotel is very nice, though its location is not very good.

It's situated in the Copacabana area, but a bit far from the beachfront and the neighborood isn't very good. No restaurants around or good shops.

The rooms were very nice and large and so were the bathrooms. The breakfasts were superb, I remember, one of the hotel's best features. Plentiful and tasty, with many choices, from breads, several cakes, cheeses, cold meats, fresh juices, yogurts and cereals as well as warm items, sausages, bacon, eggs.

Like I said before, I liked the hotel very much but wouldn't stay here again due to its location. Rio is turning more dangerous and Copacabana area isn't one of the safest. If you want to go out at night to have some dinner it can be a bit scary to walk in that area.

New Years in Rio

by enjoyinglife

First time down to Rio and is my first stop on my trip around the world. Speak enough spanish to get by with, but not so much Portuguese. Hoping to remedy this problem a little before a leave on the 30 dec. Any advice for places to see and stay while down in Rio would be greatly appreciated. I will be traveling by myself and looking forward to interacting with the locals as well as other travelers.
Been online looking for days so it seems to find a decent hotel that hasn't been booked up already. I found Merlin Copacabana and wondering if anyone has stayed there? Have read several of the posts on this site and have been so helpful!
thanx for any help---

Merlim Copacabana has only one problem: the street in front of it is very very noisy. Is it called Av. Princesa Isabel and is it located in the beggining of Copacabana. The best location in Copacabana is in the end, close to Ipanema.

The Merline is located a few blocks before the tunnel . There is alot of traffic to and from because through the tunnel is the RIO sul Mall. Its a nice hotel. My friend worked there as a security guard for a year. However it is sort of out of the way (ie subway, beach, nice bars, restaurants,etc.). If you want to stay in copa stay more towards the middle or end so you have better access (ie. walk, bus, or cab) to Ipanema.
