service charges

by kimbo-slice

i will be travelling to rio in nivember, one thing that i can`t get an answer to is the " service charge " in restaraunts and bars. can anyone tell me how much will be added on to the final bill? e.g 5% 10% 15% ??? any answers would be greatfully appreciated by anyone. many thanks darren, manchester uk

Most restaurants include 10% on the bill and a few don't.
Before paying the bill, just ask if it's included or not.
Generally if the service is good, people add something on top
of the bill.

Re: service charges

by cachaseiro

the 10% you see on almost all restaurant bills in brazil is the waiters wage.
additional tips are not compulsary, but they staff will be happy if you leave a bit.

"cachaseiro" is right on point. That is the real deal.

By the way, - does Kimbo know you are using his name....? Not one to make angry......d;o)

Usually 10%, occasionally 12.5%, always stated on the bill and always optional (but, in practice, nobody ever declines to pay, unless they've had shocking service).

may i suggest about the person who`s concerned about my name that there is a life out there and maybe he needs one or does he honestly think kimbo is gonna come to my house and give me a pasting. get a life man and grow up

...may I suggest that you reveal yourself with a photo and a name like the rest of us, before throwing out personal insults.

Here is a hint, - a smiley face after a sentance is there to suggest that the person writing is smiling as they write. It was a joke, - get it!!!??

ordinntho i have the best sense of humor one could possibly imagine, it isn`t hard to do try it sometime i mean who knows man you just may enjoy getting one! but on the other hand if he has to leave his computer maybe he thinks there isn`t a life without it.

Hey Darren, I´m from Manchester too! There seem to be lots of Mancunians in Rio :-) Most restaurants add 10 per cent, some particularly flashy ones add 15 per cent. You don´t need to tip on top of that. The service charge replies even in really informal bars - basically, if they bring the drink to your table, yuo pay the service charge. In a lot of bars you can afford it just by going to the bar yourself and ordering/picking up your own drink. If you are on a tight budget it can make quite a big difference to the cost of a night out! On the subject of restaurants, try and check out this place in Santa Teresa, where I live - higly recommended!

Travel Tips for Rio de Janeiro

by travelstevie

try to take a flight which brings you there in the early morning so that you can see the sun coming up and see the beautiful beaches below and see the Pao di Acucar (small mountain from where you have a nice overview over the whole city). Try to dance the samba. The kind people, the young boys playing football on the beach, the special light (very bright) which makes the ocean glittering, the music.

CENTER ZONE

by janaina

The Center corresponds to the old part of the city, and it's referred as "cidade"(the city)or "centro"(downtown).
Carioca,Cinelandia,Lapa and others are the main districts in downtown area, where amjor Brazilians and International companies keep their offices.
Rio's beautiful buildings, churches and other constructions from the 19th century or early 1900's,like the Municipal Theater, the National Museum Of Fine Arts, the National Library, the Calendaria Church, the Lapa Arches and amny others, are concentrated in this area.

Drink Caipirinha

by jeffjun

Caipirinha (or Caipi for short) is a drink commonly ordered at night clubs in Rio. Its ingredients are lime, sugar, crushed ice, and Cachaca (a distilled spirit made from fresh pressured sugarcane. Much like wine, the flavor of cachaca depends on the Brazilian climate).

Here is how to make Caipirinha:
Cut the lime into thin slices. Place the lime and sugar in a small glass and, with a wood pestle, press only the core of the fruit, without forcing the peel. This prevents the spirits from being sour. Add the Cachaca, mix and fill the glass with crushed ice. Serve in a glass decorated with a slice of lime.

The truth is. . . . . . .

It so happened that the Riot Police were patrolling somewhere downtown when we caught up wih them. No,no way did they catch up with us, I can assure you, there was no scandal or illegal activity, we just happened to be in the same place at the same time.

It is this unexpected situation that helps make a holiday a memorable experience, it shows some local customs and local situations.
