Samba Schools

by Franja

I’ll be in Río the last week-end of May. I love samba and I’m wondering if this during week-end some Samba School is performing some event like rehearsals, “feijoadas”, etc. Of course, I prefer to attend an authentic and popular meeting in a Samba School than to go a show only focused in tourists. Thanks in advance for your help.

There are styles of samba..... Carnaval samba, and dancehall samba gafiera).

Slowly, you can do it:

I believe it's still a little early for anything to do with next year's Carnaval (lunches, etc) to have begun.

However, you could go to Lapa to see and hear a live samba band and singer at Carioca da Gema and try dancing samba gafiera with the locals. Ot try Estudantina or Elite in the Centro.

Travel Tips for Rio de Janeiro

Paradise is here

by jrcnd

My hobby is to travel. I got to travel for more than 60 cities around the world. From China to Alaska The is not any city in the world dazzled me more than Rio de Janeiro. The city is the paradise in the earth. I would have to write a book to count everything of beautiful that I saw in this city, but I can summarize in only one word: Happiness, Happiness and Happiness. The Scenery begins with beautiful blue beaches being in turn of tropical mountains where you can enjoy the purest green of the mountains drinking an immense variety of natural juices that only exists here and observing beautiful women in sculptural bodies. If only that was enough, it would be great. But the city offers much more, it is the most cheerful people of the world, here there is not difference of blacks, whites, Yelows or Catholics, Jews and Muslims do not exist they are all cariocas (residents of the Rio de Janeiro) and carioca is the people that won the title of more cordial of the world. You do not constrained to asking information, here it is the largest pleasure to give and to receive information (they take you in the door if it possible). Do you want culture? here it is the cradle of the bossa nova (kind of Jazz), of the music Girl from Ipanema (Jobim song), it Dances the samba, the colourfoul Carnival Parade, The largest theater of the Latin america and also has the largest library of the Latin america (National Library), the largest (number of people) New years' eve of the world. Restaurants??? One of the largest restaurants of the Latin america. Everything for a price infinitely inferior to the of Europe or of the United States. Have you thought to have a complete dinner in on the most famous hotels of the world (Copacabana Palace), with a cukery thankfully international paying about 25 dollars. Only in Rio, my friend.. But I think the best is not Copacabana Palace French restaurant, better same it is the Rotisserie (Churrascaria), a restaurant type with a fixed price that you can eat the whole meat type to 10 dollars or less. Only in my Rio friend... Sports??? It is the city of Maracana (larger stadium of the world). That is the city that was born for the sports. Here...beautiful bodies are rules and non exception. When you arrive of airplane from Europe and it is going from the airport to Ipanema or Copacabana you will see beautiful people walking around, running, bicycles, people playing volleyball, wing delta, seems until an Olympics. That has explanation: CLIMATE, is good most of the year.
Night in Rio? Hundreds of bars, dance clubs for all the tastes and styles. I recommend the dance club in the top of the hill of the urca, with your blinding view. Shopping? What such the 5th greatest shopping of the world? May I say some words ? Visit the Ipanema hippie fair, a famous fair where everything is good, beautiful and cheaply. I don't need to speak a lot of Cristo Redentor, Urca Hill, Sugar Loaf Hill (cable car) and Botanical Garden. There are lot of information about that on Internet. Visit Rio, you won't be sorry, Rio is famous for doing that they call "travelers' of the house" that means people that after one time visiting, the visit every years that city that received the title of Wonderful City.

Visit Cristo Redentor at...

Visit Cristo Redentor at Corcovado. (Christ the Redeemer). There is a certain spiritual atmosphere up there; halfway between heaven and earth.

The view of Rio is also breathtaking! My fondest memory of Rio would be staying at the Copacabana, although I did find it annoying to get the Barry Manilow song occasionally stuck in my head. ;)

To see and be seing:
IPANEMA'S POSTO 10 AND PRAIA DO PEPE (Beaches):these beaches is where u can find the beautiful youth of the city. Remember that during weekends its very very crowed.

A funny name for toilet paper

by b1bob

Sometimes the most educational part of a foreign trip is a visit to a local grocery store or even a big old supermarket. I really got a kick out of this brand of toilet paper called Snob. The Brazilians are my kind of people since they name a brand of toilet paper after folks who are really the lowest forms of life (whether they know it or not).

Business Hours

by Alless

Typical business hours are Monday-Friday 9 am-6 pm and Saturday 10 am-2pm. During the Summer (December-March), many stores stay open on Saturday until 7 pm, especially in Ipanema and Copacabana. Shopping malls are often open Monday-Saturday 10 am-10 pm. There are an increasing number of 24-hour grocery and convenience stores, such as Zona Sul on Avenida Visconde de Piraja (Ipanema); Sendas, Adalberto Ferreira 18 (Leblon), phone 512-8677; and Extra, Ave. das Americas 2000 (Barra da Tijuca), phone 439-2000. These stores also open on Sunday. Most open-air markets run 7 am-3 pm.
