The Rio Othon has some of the best views in Rio but that's where the value tends to end. For $300 a night you get an aged room, aged television, no tea and coffee making facilities and a room service menu that delievers food that looks like its been in a traffic accident. Hotel staff are helpful and security is tighter than expected which is reassuring. If I pay the same money for a hotel in Singapore, Manila, Bangkok, Saigon, Kuala Lumpur and even Jakarta I get much much better in every single way. I wondered why the beaches of Copacabana were so often deserted compared to those in the Asia Pacific region. Please take this as constructive advice - Rio Othon senior management you need send a delegation to Asia to learn how to do tourist hotels properly. Hope this helps.

Easy access to the beach, directly across the road

It is directly across from the beach and the immediate area around the hotel is safe. Good hotel with accommodating staff and the door personnel watch closely who is coming into the hotel. I was told that if you bring a guest back with you that she would have her identification papers with. The rooms had a safe to store your valuables. Check out the other reviews, they are good and with more info.

I ate at the outside restaurant, next to the hotel and it was fine.

Unique Quality: While I wasn't totally comfortable, regarding personal safety in Rio, this hotel is in a good location. It is the location and the view that really add to this hotel. The beach was frequented by families, young and old. The view was nice the beaches had a few topless women sunning themselves and playing volleyball. There were also beach vendors selling soda & beer and renting beach chairs, sun umbrella or whatever you might need. I sat in a rented beech chair at the one that was between the hotel and the water.

    Well located

Facing Copacabana Beach, the Rio Othon Palace offers its guests far more than a privileged view of one of the world’s loveliest and most famous shorelines. It is not just the dazzling beauty of Copacabana that attracts visitors of all nationalities, but also its cosmopolitan culture, smart shops, handcraft fairs, restaurants ranging from elegant to budget-friendly, night clubs and bars, theatres and cinemas, enchanting visitors with a broad range of free-time options at any time o the day or night. Close to famous symbols of the marvellous city, such as the Sugar Loaf and the Statute of Christ the Redeemer atop the Corcovado peak, the Rio Othon Palace hotel is close to another famous beach: Ipanema, with its golden girls and eye-catching fashions.

Comfortable Standard rooms are located at the lateral of the building with a balcony and partial ocean view – double or twin beds equipped with: telephone with two lines and answering machine, remote control colour TV with international channels, safe, mini bar , AM/FM radio, air conditioning, 24 hour room service, hair dryer, laundry and dry cleaning
All Deluxe Rooms are very spacious with a balcony and ocean front - double or twin beds. equipped with: telephone with two lines and answering machine, remote control colour TV with international channels, safe, minibar , AM/FM radio, air conditioning, 24 hour room service, hair dryer, laundry and internet access (broadband )

Unique Quality: Lobby Bar, located at ground floor, Estancia and Patio Tropical located at third floor. Every Saturday, offering delicious Feijoada, a typical Brazilian speciality. For a great night out without leaving the hotel, the rooftop Skylab Bar and Restaurant offer light meal with the best view of Copacabana Beach.
Over all view is a great location in the heart of coco cabana beach. The down fall is that is also next to “Help” night club which is known for its prostitutes.

Directions: A nice hotel and well worth the money. I would stay here again if should return to Rio.

    Great View of Copacabana Beach

I stayed at the Othon Palace Hotel in Copacabana because I won a raffle back in Arizona. I grew up in Rio in the '60s and this hotel did not exist then. I found it very modern and comfortable, but nothing to really set it apart from less expensive hotels other than its physical presence at mid-beach in Copacabana. As the tallest hotel around, you have great views in either direction. I only ate breakfast at the hotel, which was nothing special.

The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The beach directly in front of the hotel has some of the roughest surf in Rio when the tide comes in. I would recommend walking a few hundred yards to the south to avoid getting caught in the undertow and rough surf. If you get caught, swim out beyond the waves and then parallel to the beach. You'll find you can return to the shore without problems. After about five days, I switched hotels to stay at the Miramar Palace Hotel, where the U.S. Embassy housed all diplomatic visitors in the 1960's.

Unique Quality: The Othon Palace looks like the tallest hotel on Copacabana Beach, with the possible exception of the Meridian down the same beach in Leme. There is a swimming pool located on the roof for those too timid to cross the street to the beach. My room had a varnished red brick wall. Beds were nothing special, but the place was very modern.

Directions: Right in the middle of Copacabana Beach. Hard to miss, because it it the tallest building right in the middle of this world famous location.

    Rio Othon Palace Hotel

The height of this hotel at 28 floors makes it the highest on Copacabana and the large swimming pool and terrace area are great to relax and enjoy the wonderful views. I only spent 2 nights here but found it a very nice place to stay. Rooms are OK, although not that large for a 5* hotel plus I didn't really like the exposed brick wall decor behind the beds.

The other best thing apart from the high terrace is the large restaurant which served a great breakfast. The sound of the running water feature is a nice touch.

Hotel in Copacabana

I've stayed in this Hotel a few times during the past 2 years. The location is great. It's just across the street from Copacabana beach. The rooms are somewhat outdated compared to some of the newer (Marriott) hotels. Lock-up your valuables in the hotel safe. The hotel in safe but once you go outside be careful.

The last time I stayed there I checked out and immediately remembered that I left a Polo Shirt in the bathroom. I asked the hotel staff at the check-out counter to have someone bring it down to me. Of course the hotel staff sent someone but they claimed there was no shirt there.

I would stay at a hotel on Avenida Atlantica in Copa. We stayed at the Othon Palace. A 5 star hotel. However I would not recommend it as it was not up to 5 star standards in my opinion unless they give you a break on the rates. (I would rate it a 4 star). The air conditioning didn't work in my room and I had to ask them to change my room. The beds were pretty narrow. The work-out room was on the small side with just a few pieces of equipment, and it felt dark inside the lobby. You might consider Copacabana Palace or the Mariott, both on the beach. However I did have a great view from my hotel room. (see pic)

Not a bad hotel, but a GREAT location

The Rio Othon Palace is not what you might expect from a 4 star hotel in other major cities in the world. The rooms were clean but not exactly luxurious... but you dont go to Rio for the hotel room. The views from the windows are exactly as breathtaking as they look in the posted photos, and the hotel is right on Copacabana beach, and close to Ipanema beach.
The rooftop restaurant is nice, but a little too expensive, but there are many places to eat nearby that are more reasonable and still pretty good (try the feijoada!)
When we arrived a wireless internet connection was provided for free in the lobby, but the hotel quickly changed to a pay service when they saw all the laptops from the academic conference. If they do charge for internet service, consider one of the nearby internet cafe's that are very cheap and reliable.
To change currency, go to the little shop around the northwest corner of the building with the flashing light on the sign, as they gave us a better rate than the hotel.

Terrible before, nightmare afterwards

by TripAdvisor Member bezjohnson

The management of the othon palace were rude and not helpful at all. Had to pay extra to have use of safety deposit in the room. Room was fairly small for a 4 star hotel and not well furnished. The shower did not work in the bathroom.

The hotel does have a gym, but guests of the hotel cannot use it as you need a membership.

Worse was to follow upon returning to london when i was billed by the hotel for the cost of staying in the hotel despite this all being paid upfront through the travel agents!

Hated every minute

by TripAdvisor Member sass05

We booked a room at this hotel hoping it would live up to its name . How wrong could we be. The room that we were allocated was filthy. There was about an inch of dust all over, we had bugs in the beds and the bed linen was all soiled . We made several complaints to management but nothing was done . Had we not paid in advance then we would have left straight away . I would not recommend this hotel to anyone as its certainly not a palace.

by TripAdvisor Member BenjAHmmin

Management was extremely rude and unaccommodating. The room was tiny with outdated decor. We asked for two double beds in our room and what we got was one double and two twins which we complained about. The maid service arrived and pushed the two twins together. We found a dead roach in the drawers and the room had a stench of cheese. If you do plan to stay here, don't walk around bare foot in your room! Expect to pay more than price you booked it for when you arrive! On the positive note, the daily breakfast buffet was delicious. I suggest sticking with the JW.

yeah nice hotel. Safer in Ipanema where you can walk late at ngith safely. In Copacabana stay on avenida Atlantico (but not on the beach side) late at night. NS Copacabana, the main shopping street, is OK up to about 10pm.

Make sure and try out Help disco on the main strip.

It's a good enough hotel, though popular with male, middle-aged Argentine tourists, and the young prostitutes that quite a few of these visitors favour.

Personally, I prefer Ipanema, where I recommend the 4* beach-side Praia Ipanema.
