Savoy Othon Travel Hotel
Savoy Othon Travel Hotel I would rate as a 2 star hotel. The hotel is okay if you want a clean basic no fancy place to stay. I stayed here for about 9 nights in March 2005. They serve continental breakfast each morning and the hotel is well situated. I intend to be back in Rio and Salvador this summer, 2006, Rio de Janeiro is one of the best cities I have ever visited.
Unique Quality: If you are based here, the Copacabana beach is right behind the hotel, within 1 block of the hotel. There are restaurants and somewhat a good night life around the area. And if you want to go to other beaches like Ipanema, they are within 1 or 2 bus stops away. I was pretty much content just staying in this area when I was in Rio.
There are groceries stores, and all types of restaurents around here and Internet cafes.

we liked it
It is not on the beach, but it is not as pricy as the ones on the beach. It is decent, and clean. Has nice buffet breakfasts. it is only 2 blocks from the beach, bus stops right in front of the hotel. Also it is on the closer side to Ipanema, which has cleaner water than Copacabana. We walked from the hotel to Ipanema.

Good Bargain Lodging
We stayed in Nov/Dec 03; good location on a very busy street only 2 blocks from the beach. I would recommend this to a budget-minded traveler; no frills but good value.
Unique Quality: No views, no pool, the elevator had a funky display of time and temp that never was accurate, but the complimentary breakfast was ample, lots of variety, even fresh fruit and the coffee was delicious!

Budget Hotel in Copacabana
Daily rate per room: 153,- R$ (163,- R$ for a Luxo - it pays off!) + 15 % tax
Safe: 3,50 R$ extra
Book ahead - some Dutch groups usually fill the place!
Unique Quality: free airport transport (taxi would be 50 R$) - sometimes you have to ask for it and insist on it (it's part of the game ...)
if you stay at least 5 days: one free tourist tour included (Corvovado, Sugar Loaf or Petropolis - last one recommended, first two can be easily done alone)

Two Budget Hotels
+ Rio Copa, at Av Princesa Isabel, 370, is
an excellent budget choice. A suite -- an 'L' shaped room -- was $R70 in 1998 (about US$65 then, perhaps US$22 in 2003).
Though it's on one of the busiest streets in Copacabana, the hotel's heavy, double-paned windows keep most noise out. There's a restaurant on the top floor that serves a complimentary breakfast and decent meals other times of day.
+ Savoy Othon, at Ave N S de Copacabana, 995, is not a good choice. Rooms are small and not well maintained. It's noisy. There's no restaurant, though a perfunctory breakfast is available.
The Savoy is in the lowest ('travel') of the Othon chain's three classes of hotels. In 2002 a tiny room facing the backs of other buildings cost R$70 (about US$35 then, maybe US$22 today).
Unique Quality: + Rio Copa has a roof-top pool with decent views toward the ocean, as well as a sauna and a workout room. Its staff is friendly and helpful.
+ There is almost nothing good about the Savoy Othon aside from its location near the center of the Copcabana area and two short blocks from the beach. The staff was unhelpful and even surly.

Unique Quality: Similar to Ibis hotels in Europe, the Othon chain offers good standard accomodation at a good price. It is possible to strike a deal for longer stays.

I will be in Rio at the end of March and may be staying at the Savoy Othon. Please can you tell me if it is close to Help. Also are there loads of girls to pick up on copacabana beach? Please let me know where the action is in Rio and how dangerous it is.

Hahaha, man it's dangerous I was just there for a month over christmas. I didn't have any problems. HELP is filled with hookers I went in there a few times to check it out. Purely fun lol, lots of none brazilian men looking for a good time lol. The quality is pretty good the prices aren't bad either. They may try and start off at 250 300 reais but you can negociate down to 150. They usually stay all night and part of the next day. Some go back they need to make more money lol. You'll figure it out it's a fun place. A place I recommend for finding fellow north americans and english speaking chaps. Is a pub called Shenanigans in Ipanema it's lots of fun great place seven days a week. I hope you enjoy your trip to Rio de Janeiro it was my first and definatly not my last I'm going back in 2007 around carnaval. I miss that place really bad take care~

Lox03, Make sure your hotel will let you have "guests" if you plan on taking someone back to your room that isn't checked in with you. If they don't, you may have to offer a bribe the to hotel guard!

I don't remember the exact address it's right by Bunker, la boy and la girl.. If you go along Souto the street that is along the beach in Ipanema it's quite early by posto seven. A shell gas station behind there.. If you ask someone where the hippy fair is on sundays shenanigans is right there!!
Yes you can bribe anybody in brazil it's ***ing funny!!
