The Sofitel Rio de Janeiro
by traveldave
I spent a week in the Sofitel Rio de Janeiro (formerly the Rio Palace Hotel), located on Ponta de Copacabana between the Copacabana and Ipanema neighborhoods. The hotel offers 388 luxurious rooms with balconies overlooking Copacabana Beach and Sugar Loaf Mountain. The Sofitel Rio de Janeiro provides its business travelers with a state-of-the-art convention and business center. In addition, there are two swimming pools, two saunas, and a gymnasium.
Guests have a choice of two fine restaurants and two bars. The Restaurante Atlantis specializes in buffets with special themes, lunch, and à la carte dinner. The Restaurante Le Pré Catalan has been rated as one of the top ten hotel restauants in the world by Hotel World magazine. Its menu changes every two weeks.
The Bar Horse's Neck has an extensive selection of Belgian beers, and the Pool Bar offers cocktails, snacks, light lunches, and sandwiches.

really nicely designed hotels?

so I've read all the reviews and STILL I can't figure out which hotels in Rio have really cool design and ambiance. Aesthetics are everything. I don't care if they're spanking new or 200 years old, but which are the best 2 or 3 designed hotels?
thanks!

Are you looking for a boutiqe/design hotel? The Portinari in Copa is quite nice. Supposedly the Marina all suites is very nice but I have never stayed there. Look for the House in Rio in Jardim Botanica I saw a review for it in Air Frances magazine and it looked very nice, more a guest house than hotel.
