cheap and central

I just stayed here for one night. The hostel is situated in Botafogo and it has a bit of a party vibe. Many people that stayed there where going out later; I stayed in (too tired from the flight). It has a bar inside. A dormbed was 25 real.
For climbingfans. They have a climbingwall inside and organise trips to climb sugarloaf (pau de azucar)

Melting Pot of Internationalism

During my visit to Rio, I chose the Tupiniquim Hostel. It looked a rather interesting place from the photographs so I thought I'd give it a try. The last hostel I stayed in was when I was in London in July 2002 so it had been a while to get used to the hostel experience again. I had a good stay here. I met quite a few interesting people, and the employees Eliseu and Taaisa (can't spell her name right lol) were very very nice and hospitable. If you meet them if you're there tell them Eric says yo! Staff is what helps to make a good hostel, and unlike the one I stayed in London, the staff actually wants to get to know you. The only things that I was bothered at was that the AC in our dorm didn't work so it was rather stuffy inside (it was the Mitos e Lendas dorm, I'm not sure about the other dorms but from what my friend told me his had REALLY good AC) and that the hot water worked when it wanted to. But like the tagline says, it's "Um Lugar Alternativo, para pessoas alternativas". It's a nice place and in a good neighborhoood. I stayed during Carnaval so I can't give a direct price guide because I'm sure the price goes down during other parts of the year (except New Year's of course) so I apologize. If you stay here, you might be expected to wire a deposit before you go, about a quarter of the total price of your dorm/room, so make sure you have that handy and wire it. They do this mostly because they get people who reserve and then don't show up. So that's the reason. :) Enjoy your stay at Tupiniquim!

Unique Quality: Like any good hotel or hostel, you can book tours and stuff directly with the staff here at Tupiniquim. Just some of the tours you can book here are hang gliding (which I LOVED by the way), favela tour, rock climbing and much more. The other cool thing is it feels like home in a sense that there's always a cook who cooks Brazilian breakfasts, lunches and dinners. The breakfast is free but lunch and dinner are charged to your tab. The lunches and dinner range from R$7,00 to R$12,00 depending on what's being served. The hostel itself is gated so that way not just anybody can come in from the street. There's a bell you must ring to be let in, if the door is locked that is. There is quite a lot to do here if you just wanna sit around. You can watch movies, you can play pool, foosball or the Playstation, and they even have a rock climbing wall (which no one used when I was there but it looked pretty cool).

Great place for solo travellers

The staff is what makes this place so great. Unbelievably nice people and it's great for people travelling solo and want to meet up with like-minded travellers and party.

This place is not that clean or quiet and has a problem with plumbing but you honestly don't even notice it much because you are so busy having a blast there.

The hostel is in a safe and residential neighbourbood, not that many tourist here so therefore it is not really a target for muggings. On several occasions a group of walked out and about during the wee hours of the morning without incident.

Unique Quality: Free breakfast from 8-11am - bread, assorted meat, cheese and fruit. Home cook dinner also available every night for $r 7. Internet is $R 4 / hour. There is also a bar, pool table, foz ball table, table tennis, tv with cable and tons of DVDs, library, numerous games. Walking distance to copacabna and minutes from supermarket and metro station.
