modern Hotel in Rio-Brazil by mangueirense Brazil offers a wide range of accommodations, for every budget. In the large cities there are modern high-rise hotels as well as apartment hotels known in Brazil as apart-hotels. The apart-hotels are often a better deal than regular hotel rooms (especially for those who stay for some weeks at one place), offering both cheaper rates and more space: a separate living room, bedroom, and kitchen. The drawback is that you often don't get the pool and restaurants and other amenities of a hotel. Outside of the large cities (or even in them)you will often find smaller hotels named "Pousadas", essentially our equivalent of a bed-and-breakfast or small inn. The Pousadas are often small and privately run hotels that are less expensive than the major hotels. Grading: The Brazilian Tourist Board (EMBRATUR) has a star-rating system for hotels used by most establishments in towns. The classification is not, however, the standard used in Europe and North America. 5-star is the grade for deluxe hotels. 3-star hotels are good value for money and offer well-kept accommodation, whilst a 1-star hotel can only offer basic amenities Accommodation prices fluctuate widely. The rates posted at the front desk--the rack rate or "tarifa balcão" are just a guideline. If you found a webpage of a hotel that seems to suit you, you can look for the word "tarifas" or "Promocoes" to get an idea on how are the prices. Unfortunately not every homepage of Pousadas or hotels is in english yet, so if you do not find prices mentioned, ask by E Mail! It is also important to know that in most of hotels and Pousadas you do not pay a double room (apartamento duplo) per person, you pay it per room! Outside of high season and on weekends you can almost always negotiate significant (20%-30%) discounts (e possivel ter um desconto?) High season is from mid-December to Carnaval (mid- to late Feb), Easter week, long weekends, and July (winter vacation). Theme: Hotel

Albergue in Brazil by mangueirense Budget Teavellers like backpackers might be interested in this: "Dormitórios" which have several beds to a room, cost as little as US$5 per night, though standards are correspondingly basic (with shared bathroom facilities); a Pousada (small guesthouse) costs approximately US$10 per night. Rooms with bathrooms are called apartamentos, those without a bathroom are called quartos. There is a nice brazilian webpage for backpackers finding accomodation, "Albergues" can be found under: http://www2.uol.com.br/mochilabrasil/albergue.shtml Hotels and Pousadas can be found under: http://www2.uol.com.br/mochilabrasil/gheb.shtml The best guide-book to find acomodations a foreigner in Brazil could have (especially if he doesn't have reserved hotels in all the places in Brazil he will travel to) is the ‘Guia do Brasil Quatro Rodas’, which includes maps available from EMBRATUR and from any news stand in Brazil. This guide book is written in portuguese, but very easy to understand even for a non-portuguese speaker and cost around 35 brazilian Reais (around 12 US Dollars). It includes also advices on where to eat out, what to do, best beaches, etc. There are also some other Guide books specified for different cities like the "Guia Sampa" for Sao Paulo or the "Guia Praias" for the best beaches. Webpage of the Quatro Rodas Guides is: http://guia4rodas.abril.uol.com.br/ Other good and useful links for you to find a good Hotel or Pousada in Brazil are for example: http://www.hoteis.com.br http://brescia.terra.com.br/hoteis/ http://www.ondehospedar.com.br If you need any help regarding to find accomodation or do want to find a special hotel/Pousada please do not hesitate to contact me...I will try to help you in any question! nice and small Pousada in Brazil by mangueirense Hotel charges for children are all over the map. Most hotels will allow children under 6 years of age to stay for free in their parents' room, but over 6, the rates can vary from a 10% surcharge to a full adult supplement rate. Please note that these rates and policies are always negotiable. Accommodation taxes range from nothing to 15%, varying from city to city and hotel to hotel. Sometimes the hotels charge a service tax (taxa de servico), sometimes (especially in touristic cities like Rio or Salvador they also charge 5 % touristic tax (ISS). If you see the sentence "Nao cobramos taxa de servico" the hotel does not charge anything extra. Always check in advance what taxes will be added to your final bill. If doing a reservation over E Mail or Internet you will be almost every time have to pay 30-50 % in advance, the rest will normally be paid when checking out of the hotel. From outside of the country and especially for first time Brazil visitors it is often not very easy to decide on a hotel in advance, which is highly recommended during the high season. At other times of the year and at not so touristic places it is also possible to travel to first and then check the hotels or Pousadas at the location. The advantage of this is, that you will be able to compare the hotels very well, in therms of prices and services. Don't forget to ask for showing you a room in advance of paying if you do it this way! ("Gostaria ver um apartamento antes de decidir") YOUTH HOSTELS: There are over 90 youth hostels (Albergues de juventude). Generally they are one of the cheapest options to stay into a city in Brazil, most of them are very clean and also accepts groups and families. Just ask for a double-room (quarto/apartamento duplo). For further information, contact Federação Brasileira dos Albergues da Juventude, Rua General Dionisio 63, Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro (tel: (21) 286 0303; fax: (21) 286 5652; e-mail: info@hostel.org.br; Website: http://www.hostel.org.br Theme: Hotel

by acemj I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel in Foz do Iguacu. Though, it was the smallest town I visited in Brazil, Foz is loaded with good hotel choices as a result of the waterfalls and the resulting tourists. This place is fully modern with cable TV and clean, comfortable facilities. See my Foz do Iguacu page for more information. by acemj There are plenty of good places to stay in Rio, but you'll probably want to stay in Zona Sul, either in Copacabana or Ipanema since this is the safest area and it's closest to most of the primary attractions. I ended up at this hotel, which is nothing spectacular, but has an unbeatable location. A few blocks in one direction and you're sunning yourself on Copacabana with Sugar Loaf Mountain in view and a few blocks the other way and you're strolling the beach at Ipanema. See my Rio page for details. Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Rua Bulhoes de Carvalho, 61

Campground in Brazil by mangueirense As I have been asked several times on campgrounds around Brazil I searched at the Internet and found following webpage: http://www.campingclube.com.br The Camping Clube do Brasil has 52 sites in 14 states. Those with an ‘international camper’s card’ pay only half the rate of a non-member (about €4 per person). For those on a low budget, service stations can be used as campsites. These are equipped with shower facilities and can supply food. For further information, contact Camping Clube do Brasil, Divisao de Campings, Rua Senador Dantas 75, 29 andar, 20000 Rio de Janeiro (tel: (21) 210 3171; fax: (21) 2262 3143; e-mail: ccb@campingclube.com.br; website: www.campingclube.com.br). Under "Os campings" you will find the camping-places around Brasil, with adress and telephone... and under "Tabela de Precos" the prices they charge. I guess that if you can speak portuguese it will be much easier to reserve a place for you to camp there, because you might have to phone them, I think a reservation through the Internet is not available yet. Ohhh....it is already also available to reserve some of the campgrounds online, by E Mail... look at following page where you will find some photos and prices of campgrounds in Rio de Janeiro-state, Bahia and Sao Paulo -state: http://www2.uol.com.br/mochilabrasil/camping.shtml Cars may be hired, and camping arranged on safari tours or group ‘exploration’ trips in the Amazon region. The road network in Brazil is good and is being expanded, but since many parts are wild, or semi-explored, it is wise to drive on main roads, to camp with organised groups under supervision and with official permits, or otherwise to stay in recognised hotels. The country is peaceful, but because it is so large there is a real danger of getting lost, or being injured or killed by natural accident or lack of local survival skills.

Opened in 1923, this impressive stucco-fashioned edifice is Rio’s most traditional and luxurious hotel. This landmark was designed by the French architect Joseph Gire who was inspired by two hotels, the Negresco in Nice and the Carlton in Cannes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location The Copacabana Palace is superbly located: it faces the famous Copacabana Beach and yet is only minutes from the centre of Rio. The hotel is located eight miles from the domestic airport, Santos Dumont, and 20 miles from Rio de Janeiro's international airport, Tom Jobim. Rooms The Hotel, which occupies an area of over 12.000 square meters of some of the most expensive and sought after real estate in Brazil, has 226 bedrooms and suites, 148 of which in the main building and 78 suites in the Annex (tower wing building) which has added to the hotel in 1948 and fully sound proofed in 1992.From 1991 to 1995 the Annex and the Main Building were completely renovated and modernized. A new Executive floor (5th floor), which holds 26 rooms and suites and the 6th floor with 7 Penthouse suites were added to the hotel.
Hotel Facilities Copacabana Palace has two restaurants, The Pergula situated by the pool area where guests may enjoy breakfast, buffet lunch, dinner or refreshments, and the Cipriani restaurant, already rated among the city’s best, offers a selection of Northern Italian cuisine. The restaurant and its bar are located on the ground floor of the Annex, overlooking the hotel’s pool. The Copacabana Palace boasts a magnificent, semi-Olympic size swimming pool, which is without doubt the finest in Rio, and the only rooftop tennis court in the city. The hotel also has a new Fitness Centre and a Beauty Salon. Meeting Facilities The hotel’s convention center is comprised of 10 different function rooms fully equipped for banquets, seminars and meetings.
