you wont go wrong and enjoy Brazil better, cheers
the works my hotels when in those cities since 1994
OMG this place was the best. If it is still there! Great rooftop pool, think private parties and the most magnificent view. If this place hasn't starred in an independent film I'd be shocked.
Decor...striking. Staff fabulous and caring and friendly. It was a most memorable stay.
I stayed at the Estrela do Mar pousada from Aug. 8th thru to the 16th-2010.
It's everything they had advertised it to be.
A very clean, bright and happy pousada. The service was outstanding. People are extremely friendly and helpful and I still keep in touch with them to this day.
A little troupe of resident monkey's to entertain you while eating breakfast.
Breakfast was fantastic as well. It's not a buffet style but they will pretty much make you what you like and there was always more than enough food.
A short block away from the Barra lighthouse and beaches. A safe area of Salvador that I felt comfortable walking around even after dark. Huge shopping mall 10 min. walk away. Lot's of little restaraunts and cafe's to dine and hang out at, all within 5 min walk.
The Pelirinho/downtown is a 15 min. cab ride / or 25 min. bus ride(I used both modes of transportation) as is the ferry to any of the islands in the bay.
I totally recommend to anyone thinking of spending time in Salvador to consider staying at the
Estrela do Mar.

I stayed the first night with my 2 travel companions at the Hotel Ilha do Marajo for 180 Reais or $34 each. This hotel has a beautiful pool with a poolside bar, a wonderful free extensive breakfast including eggs cooked to order, fresh fruit and juices, baked corn bread, croissants etc. I saw a free folkloric dance troupe and 7 piece band here also, a caramboi (sp?). The grounds are immaculate and it is on the waterfront of the Rio Paracauari River. You can walk on the banks of the river to the town from here at low tide or on the grassy street in the drier seasons. My friends wanted a less expensive place and left to Joanes. This being the end of many days of travel I opted to stay in Soure. I stayed the next night at the hotel for 120 R or $68. The hotel has 36 rooms available and not often full totally. We paid 180 $R for a triple and then $120 Reais for a single room. I think just showing up you might get this better rate than booking through a Belem travel agent or online site.
Soure has very few cars and is so quiet!
The first night at the hotel we found Restaurante Canta Vanina across rua 7 from the hotel but my friends thought it too expensive to eat there and so we walked into town and had a somewhat satisfactory meal along the river. The next night once I was on my own I ate at Francois' Canta Vanina. Here I had the best meal I had on this 5 week journey. Francois made me a fish filet about 2 " thick, pan fried, lightly in oil, witha big sweet white potato with garlic butter. On the side was a large green salad with small chopped onion and dressed with white wine vinegar and lite oil. This meal was perfect! The fish was something with Amarilo in it's name. The meal was $20 R or $11 USD. The view at sunset is fabulous. The tables and decor ar relaxing and comfortable, lovely place. Francois is a very warm, caring man and a wonderful cook. He is open for lunch by appointment and makes a lovely huge salad with nearly a head of green lettuce, egg, olives and more. If you are missing salads and thick, moist fish, then this is your spot. I ate here every night and a couple lunches too. Francois also makes and sells his art jewelry on site. It is made of Amazon wood and seeds. It is highly polished and of rich, earthy colors. He makes rings, bracelets and necklaces. I highly recommend this restaurant.
HOTEL ILHA DO MARAJO (HÔTEL ILE DU MARAJO)
I recommande vivement ce restaurant.
Large pool with a poolside bar, lovely grounds, extensive breakfast with fresh baked breads and sweets, fresh juices and fruit as well as eggs cooked to order. Wonderful restaurant across Trav. 7 Canta Vanina also on the water.

Serra dos Tucanos Lodge is situated at an elevation of about 1,300 feet (396 meters) among the towering mountains of Três Picos State Park. Originally a large private home and banana plantation, Serra dos Tucanos Lodge was established in 2002 by a dedicated birdwatcher exclusively as a lodge for birdwatchers, naturalists, and people who are seeking a peaceful vacation surrounded by nature.
The lodge has over 50 acres (20 hectares) of grounds that include landscaped gardens and hiking trails that meander through the Atlantic rainforest. Two small rivers also pass through the grounds of the lodge.
Guests can relax on the lodge's patio and verandas to watch the glittering hummingbirds attracted to the hummingbird feeders, and colorful parrots, toucans, woodpeckers, tanagers, and other birds attracted to the feeding stations and bird tables. (Over 205 species of birds have been recorded on the lodge's grounds, more than 60 of which are endemic to the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil). A photography blind makes it easy for guests to take close-up photographs of some of the area's birds.
For guests who do not want to spend their entire vacation at the lodge, various birdwatching excursions are available to see birds of different habitats that cannot be seen at the lodge. In addition, for those people who do not necessarily want to spend their day on nature excursions, a new swimming pool offers the opportunity to cool off during the heat of the day.
Serra dos Tucanos Lodge was renovated and planned with birdwatchers in mind. A large meeting room makes it convenient for birdwatching groups to meet and go over the day's sightings list. Birdwatchers generally take their breakfast very early, so the kitchen is open for early risers. Treated water is available so guests can fill their water bottles before heading out to a day of birdwatching.
There is enough room in the lodge for up to 14 people, so it never feels crowded and guests feel as if they are at a private home. Rooms include singles, twins, doubles, and two superior rooms with balconies. A solar-powered heating system ensures that all rooms have hot water.

When the airplanes in Europe were grounded due to the Iceland volcano I got stuck in Sao Paolo. Well, not the nest city to spend a few lazy days, so I set off for the cost. Ended up un Ihla Bela and the Pousada Nautilus. A small, well kept Inn in the city center on this beautiful island. Good standard, TV, WiFi, Aircon in all rooms, small pool, 300 m to the beach. Price was in April (off season) 125 Reales per night including breakfast.
Warning: English is not a working language in this part of the world
One of the best in towm ( in the words a my taxy driver. " ony 2nd 2 the meridian") lol
Japanese hotel in the heart of jardins ( posh area of sao paulo), great location ( bairro paraiso), close 2 avenida paulista, walking distance os the metro station paraiso, and many bus stops. close 2 the shopping areas ( orcar ferire and others) and short cab rides away from the restaurants and cab areas.
Increadibly nice staff, great amenities - indoor pool, 24hr gym, a masseur, dry sauna , sushi bar ( 7-10 pm), an amazing breakfast and luch buffet at great prices, jussst greeeat!
I wd definitly recomend it 2 people ( if u r not looking 2 much at a budget)/
For some it may b a litle pricey but is well worth it.
I was here w/ my mother and then alone, so for young people i wd recomend 2 share a room w/ someone then it doesnt seem expensive at all. :)
enjoyyy
a small 24hr pool ad gym, private masseur ( free), free belly dance lessons 3x a week, great neighbourshood, so great 2 walk aroud exploring the restaurants and litle shops of the area.
the view of my room want all that ( too many tall buildings around it, not my cup of tea)

Good basic hotel with friendly staff - hotel facilities were the same as any other IBIS hotel in Europe or wherever. Despite this, I would probably go back.
