Picking up the advice of fellow VTer, easyoar, and the word of our well-thumbed guidebook to Chile and Easter Island, we opted for the Mana Nui Inn, and were more than happy with our choice. From our first enquiries via the internet right through to our final farewell at the airport the night we left, the owners, Bicky Nahoe and her husband, Exquil, and their family, could not have been more helpful and hospitable. Exquil was away from the island whilst we were there so our contact with him was via a some emails and a couple of phone conversations once we were actually on the island, Bicky's English and our Spanish being on about a par! Bicky and her daughters were charming. One of their daughters (who spoke excellent English, but who left for her job on the mainland next day) met us at the airport, took us for a tour around the town on our way to the house where she answered our questions, and provided maps and an excellent overview of what to expect and how best to see the island while Bicky brought us delicious chilled guava juice. It was a great start to our stay and certainly set the tone for the next few days. A fellow guest obviously felt the same way - he had returned for his 3rd visit to the island, staying at Mana Nui each time. We would do the same if we were to return.
Come morning we were able to take in what Mana Nui had to offer - starting with a delicious and copious breakfast served on the little terrace of our cabana with a view of the sea and the moai of Ahu Tahai. Our cabana - comprised of a large bedroom, bathroom and the aforementioned small terrace - stood on its own in the garden, there are four more in a row further back in the compound, all with similar views and amenities. Although simple, the cabanas were comfortable, with lots of hot water and good water pressure in the bathroom, and were kept spotlessly clean. Breakfast was usually served on our veranda, though on our last day, as it was raining, we went over to the main house for freshly made pancakes and home made jam - guava of course! Mana Nui is a 15 minute or so walk from the centre of town, the museum is about the same distance further down the road. Ahu Tahai - the favourite spot for sunset-watching - is just a few yards away, and the unique and colourful cemetery is right near the entrance gate. The dogs mentioned by a couple of other VTers were, as easyoar says - pussycats, and we were treated to morning visits each day from a beautiful foal. What a lovely, tranquil way to start the day. Man Nui Inn (on left), Bickys house (on right) by easyoar We were reading the virtualtourist tips on Easter Island, and noticed that CulturalCompetence gave such a good review to the Mana Nui Inn, we thought we would try it ourselves. Basically everything he said was spot on. We stayed one week there and were made to feel extremely welcome. The room was clean and tidy although a little basic and hot water wasn't a problem either. Staying with one of the Islanders (albeit in a separate room - one of two just behind her house) seems to draw you into island much better than staying in a hotel where you are just another face. Although officially the room is on a bed and breakfast basis (you eat breakfast with Bicky and her family and are encouraged to ask anything you like about the island), it is not uncommon to be invited in for a evening coffee and just generally made to feel like one of the family. The warning about dogs in CulturalCompetences tip still applies although the dog is now a Boxer called Taa-tan. He was initially a little hostile, but the moment we was introduced to us he turned into a pussycat, and he has been trained not to enter the house (or rooms) so it's easy to escape him too. The rooms are also just a few minutes walk from several Moais and about a 10-15 mins walk to the museum.
Clean rooms with hot water. Very friendly owners. Nice view down to the sea and several Moai (stone heads). Spectacular sunsets in the evening - the sun sets right behind the Moai. You honestly feel that Bicky really wants you to enjoy the island and goes beyond your expectations to do this.

We are very satisfied about our stay in Residencial Tahai, after reading a recommendation on VT. This B&B has a setting in a tropical garden and is surrounded by flowers and palm trees. We did have our daily breakfast on the veranda of the main house together with the other guests; so an ideal moment to talk with other travellers from all over the world and to make plans for the day (perhaps to rent together a car or to do a guided tour). Every day we had a different breakfast to start another great day on Rapa Nui. Teresa (one of the daughters of the owner Maria) does look after the guests very well. The rooms are very spacious with bathroom; we had one in a separate building with a more or less private shadowed veranda with a view into the garden. Fatima, another daughter, is married with Patricio Ballerino, who is the best guide on Easter Island. He and his wife Fatima pick us up from the airport and showed us around in Hanga Roa. On his website (AO Tour) you will find more information about the residencial; be aware the pics on this site are a little bit outdated.

View from our room by wadekorzan This hotel is kind of quiet and certainly not in the center of Hanga Roa, but we really, really liked it. As we had a rental car, and the island is so small, there was no need to be right in town. (In fact, I don't really remember seeing hotels in town). In any case, the atmosphere was very nice, the rooms very comfortable and clean, and the views of the coast were really very beautiful. The hotel is more top end, but I mean top end for the island. There are no big hotels on the island like Sheraton, Marriot, etc. So if you are looking for a clean and great place to stay, I can recommend this hotel. I do believe the rooms are about $150 per night during the high season, but the again, it was worth it I think.
Really beautiful views of the coast

Our arrival at Isla de Pasqua (aka Easter Island) by CulturalCompetence This place was FANTASTIC! The owners (Exquil & Bicky) were extremely hospitable! Exquil speaks excellent English and Spanish; Bicky speaks Spanish and Rapa Nui. Exquil is a former LanChile pilot who lived in Chile most of his life. Bicky is an extremely empowered Rapa Nui woman who raised her daughters to appreciate and celebrate the Rapa Nui culture while also motivating them to earn college degrees. If you want interesting intellectual conversation, the Mana Nui Inn is the place for you! Both Exquil and Bicky were happy to share information about the island and the Rapa Nui people. This is one of the most intriguing cultures on earth and our hosts had firsthand knowledge to guide our experience. The accomodation consists of two guest houses that are just behind Bicky and Exquil's house. The room was simple, yet clean and decorated tastefully. Hot water was never a problem. Breakfast was served (with our hosts) every morning and was simply delicious! Bicky and Exquil also own a rental company, therefore it was easy to rent bikes, motorcycles, and 4wd vehicles. You have to like dogs if you stay here, however. Their dog, Hatu, was a very loving animal, however his bark and size could be intimidating to those who aren't dog lovers.
Exquil personally picked us up at the airport and gave us beautiful flower leighs! A spectacular Iorana (welcome)! Upon arrival, he also gave us a tour of the main roads. The Mana Nui Inn is located behind Tahai, the main political & religion ceremonial center of the Southeast side of the island. You could literally walk to the moais at the edge of the ocean. The Inn is on a hill, therefore the moais against the backdrop of a sunset was absolutely spectacular! This place is a little peice of heaven! :-)

by grets Situated on a side road in Hanga Roa, the hotel is well placed for exploring the capital. One-storey bungalows set around a swimming pool, some with fans, but no air-con. There was a problem with their sewage when we were there, apparently it's common on the island - we had to move rooms because of the 'aroma' in the room.
There is a restaurant in the hotel - you have to pre-order your dinner in the morning. Don't bother! The food was expensive and a very limited menu. It's cheap and easy to eat out in Hanga Roa. There is no bar as such in the hotel, but the receptionist will bring you drinks if you ask for it. Theme: HotelComparison: about average

I was hunted down at the airport upon arrival by Martin (in the baggage claim area) back in 2005, and I'm really happy I chose their place to be my base for my Easter Island discovery. I returned again in 2008! The double room back in 2005 was not really modern, a little bit worn down but clean, and the bathroom had running hot water all the time. In 2008 I got a different room, which is in much better state, I believe all the rooms had a renovation in the last years. The breakfast was always enough for my adventurous morning trips: fruit juice, tea, bread, ham, cheese, cake, cookie and butter. Back in 2005 there was a German guy who spent his second time on the island, the second time at Martin & Anita. In 2008 I have also returned and would probably do again if I ever get there in my life once more!
Martin can organize anything (rental car, tour guide, folk dance show information, etc.). In 2008 he got us a rental car literally within an hour of our arrival to the island! Also I found it a good place to meet other Island Explorers, with whom we could wonder around. There are friendly dogs, no need to worry, even if You don't have a dog at home (like me) and also a few cats. The garden is quiet, full of green. Theme: Bed and BreakfastPrice: US$20-40 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageDirections: Facing the church, there is a road on the right side leading up the hill towards the hospital. After about 2-3 minutes walk on the left there will be a school, while on the other side You would see a large gate right on the corner: That's Martin & Anita.Website: http://www.chile-hotels.com/maranit.htm

When we arrived in Easter Island, we did not have a hotel reservation, even though we were approached several times in the Santiago airport by touts. Not a problem, as there were a wide variety of places to chose from at the stalls at the airport in Hanga Roa.. By going this route, you get a free ride to your hotel (or whatever) from the airport. Not bad considering it is dark and a bit of a hike into town. The Kona Tau cost $15 per person with bathroom, a better than average breakfast and an OK bed. Prices could be more in the summer high season. Never did find any hot water, although we heard a rumor that it was available at times. Even though it was located out of town in a green residential setting, the dogs and roosters could make sleep a bit of a challenge. It was a 15 minute walk to downtown. Internet was available but a costly. The management was very friendly. The kitchen was available for your use. Island tours were offered at $35 per person for 6-8 hours in a comfortable van. We took two tours while we were there and highly recommend them. You get so much more out of the experience when you are told the background behind what it is that you are seeing. I'm sure that we could never have found some of the places we were shown. The Kona Tau had some odd color schemes, may not have been as clean as it could have been, the sliding glass door on our room couldn't be locked and the walls were a bit thin, but it was a friendly place, the price was right and we would stay there again if we ever go back to Easter Island.
The tours that were offered were informative and I thought well worth the money. We were not hurried and had ample time for questions and photos. by krissyM We ended up at Hotel Poike by accident as we got bumped from the hotel we were supposed to be staying at. We booked the accoodations as a package deal so I'm not sure exactly how much we paid a night. The hotel was very quaint about a 10 minute walk from the main street in Hanga Roa. SO it was in a good location. It was also close to the many artisian markets and Pea Beach where the Moais are located. The owner of the hotel was very nice and accomodating. She spoke enough english that communication was not a problem. Breakfast was provided which consisted of breads, cheeses and tea/coffee. Typical South American breakfast fare. The hotel had hot water and the rooms were cleaned daily. I would definately stay here again.
