Budget Accommodation

The owners were very friendly, accomodating and informative. The rooms were not the best ones out there, but the hostel's price and its location (near the airport and the town center) make the hostel a good choice for budget travellers like me, who is not making enough dough (yet?)

Unique Quality: General tip: we booked our rooms when we got to Easter Island, and the price we paid was cheaper than the price advertised in their website.

Additionally, the hotel does not accept credit/ATM cards.

No Stars But Good Enough For Us

When we arrived in Easter Island, we did not have a hotel reservation, even though we were approached several times in the Santiago airport by touts. Not a problem, as there were a wide variety of places to chose from at the stalls at the airport in Hanga Roa.. By going this route, you get a free ride to your hotel (or whatever) from the airport. Not bad considering it is dark and a bit of a hike into town.
The Kona Tau cost $15 per person with bathroom, a better than average breakfast and an OK bed. Prices could be more in the summer high season. Never did find any hot water, although we heard a rumor that it was available at times. Even though it was located out of town in a green residential setting, the dogs and roosters could make sleep a bit of a challenge. It was a 15 minute walk to downtown. Internet was available but a costly.
The management was very friendly. The kitchen was available for your use. Island tours were offered at $35 per person for 6-8 hours in a comfortable van. We took two tours while we were there and highly recommend them. You get so much more out of the experience when you are told the background behind what it is that you are seeing. I'm sure that we could never have found some of the places we were shown.
The Kona Tau had some odd color schemes, may not have been as clean as it could have been, the sliding glass door on our room couldn't be locked and the walls were a bit thin, but it was a friendly place, the price was right and we would stay there again if we ever go back to Easter Island.

Unique Quality: The tours that were offered were informative and I thought well worth the money. We were not hurried and had ample time for questions and photos.
