North from Puerto Natales

by anvgap

Hi!
We are travelling south to north Chile from mid-october and we're getting a bit stuck in the planning stage beyond PN. We don't drive and don't fancy the ferry. We've heard there is a bus from Punta Arenas to Peurto Montt but suspect that it only goes in Jan/Feb. Any info/advice?

It is a very long trip by bus but you could always break it up on the Argentinian side. There are a couple of companies which do the route. It is not a tourist service but a bus used by locals mainly, so it runs all year but not every day of the week. Weather, of course, can have an affect on the route in winter.
Cruz del Sur partners with Turibus for the route and I think Bus-sur is another company which does it. It is about 30 hours of bus travel if you do it in one go. I would break it somewhere in Argentina: Esquel, Barioche. I would also price flights when you are in Punta Arenas just to check what they cost. Off season and bought locally, you might get a good price.

Thanks for this.
I thought I had seen somewhere that the bus didn't stop in Argentina.

Sorry, I don't understand about the bus not stopping.

When I first heard/read that there was a bus from Punta Arenas to Puerto Montt I think I read that the bus only picked up in Chile.
If, as your question suggests, there are stops in Argentina then do you know where I can find some route information from? Thanks

The route is on the website I gave you, just backwards: Osorno – Paso Cardenal Samoré - San Carlos de Bariloche, territorio Argentino hasta Punta Arenas. So you start in Punta Arenas, go into Argentina, through Bariloche, cross back into Chile at the Cardenal Samoré pass to Osorno and on to Puerto Montt. You can get the bus from Punta Arenas to whatever point on the route suits you. There are frequent buses between Bariloche and Osorno/Puerto Montt which is why I suggested it. There is a contact page on the website if you want to contact them.
Bus-sur also does the same route according to its website, but I suspect there is a change of bus. You could try emailing them as they do not say what days they go, just the price:

After 3 hours of navigation you arrive to Puerto Toro, walking 1,000 meters, through a wonderful native forest until the border of a lagoon full iceberg, end of the way is a viewpoint where you can enjoy the Serrano glacier.

In the half way to the viewpoint, there is company hat rent zodiacs, they take you very near to the glacier spectacular view even you can touch it and also a ride through the icebergs. Do not lose the opportunity to take it worth it.

LAGO SARMIENTO

On the shores of Lago Sarmiento we had the first glimps of the Torres, and what a glimps it was. The sky were blue, with white fether clouds, the water of the lake were calm and behind the lake, high in the mountain we saw the 3 towers and there image in the water.

Torres del Paine - fauna

Although we saw grey foxes and some birds, for us it was really stunning to see lots of guanaco’s in the national park. It seemed if they were everywhere from the moment we were entering the park.

We were surprised these animals were absolutely not scared of us if we stopped along the road. They ignored us and kept playing, fighting or eating. We had no problems making pictures and made the nicest at the end of the day when we were on our way back and saw some mothers with their ‘baby’ guanaco’s.

Glacier Serrano

by vtveen

This glacier is also tumbling down the Balmaceda Mountain, but on the north slope. It ends in a glacier lake and ice breaking off the main ice wall causes several icebergs floating in the lake. Depending on the wind this icebergs do reach a shore and we could get very close to them.
(It is possible to make a (short) boat trip on the glacier lake in a zodiac around the icebergs and close to the glacier.)

We couldn’t come as close as we expected, because the viewing point is on a very safe distance from the main ice wall. This viewing point is reachable through a walkway from the pier at Puerto Toro.
The only way to see this glacier is by boat on the trip with ‘Turismo 21 de Mayo’.
