Flight from Puerto Natales to El Calafate
by MarJane
We want to fly from Puerto Natales to El Calafate, but are leary of a small 10 passenger plane. What type of plane did you use? Contact persons for the flights? Or, if you drove, did you have any problems with the border? What paperwork is needed?
Thanks

As far as I know there are on the moment just charterflights between Pt Natales and El Calafate (see: www.aeroviasdap.cl/dapitinerario-en.html).
We had a public bus (Cootra) from Argentina to Chile and had no problems at all at the border. It takes about 5 or 6 hours, depending on the border crossing.
See my Pt. Natales or El Calafate page.
Happy travels

Grey Glacier
by galy
The glacier is located on the northern tip of Lago Grey. You can have a glimps of the glacier from the loby of Hosteria Grey, 17 kilometers south to the glacier.
The glacier is a small extension of the much larger Southern Ice Field which covers a large portion of the southern Andes. The main feature of the lake is the abundance of ice bergs calving of the Glacier. Northwesterly winds blow the ice bergs down the length of the lake until they are grounded in the shallow water at the southern end. The ice bergs in the lake ranged in size from very large to ice cube sized. The bigger ones have the spectacular blue color, typical of glacial ice.
The clacier and icebergs can be best admired while sailing through the lake on board theGrey II vessel .
The sail weighing anchor from Hosteria Lago Grey and stop on the way to pickup backpackers from the near campsite. After 35 minutes among beautiful icebergs, you approach the glacier's front wall. The which is divided in two by a central island.
Don't forget your camera!!
The sailing takes 3 hours and cost 60$.

TORRES DEL PAINE : SUGGESTED ROUTE A / DAY 4 & 5
by swesn
DAY 4 : Leave your things at CAMP PEHOE, hike up along Lago del Grey to CAMP GREY for a fantastic view of GLACIER GREY.
It should take about 4 hours to get within sight of the glacier. If you do not wish to go all the way to CAMP GREY, there is a mirador to view the glacier about halfway through the route.
Total hiking time = about 5-8 hours.
DAY 5 : Catch the boat from CAMP PEHOE across LAGO PEHOE to CAMP PUDETO. The buses, which you have bought round-tickets or which you can buy tickets here, pick hikers up at various alloted times.
Now, return to Puerto Natales to shower, have a well-deserved rest, show off your new thigh muscles and leave your laundry with the professionals.
Boat trip to the glaciers
by vtveen
..... Full day Fiordo Ultima Esparanza .....
That is the announcement on the website of ‘Turismo 21 de Mayo’, the company which operates this boat trip during summer. And it is the truth, because we (and you) had to sail for 7 long hours on a rather small boat, leaving from Puerto Natales at 8.00 am and returning around 5.45 pm.
What we saw during this trip:
- the first hours we were sailing along Puerto Bories and some remote estancia’s on the shores;
- Barrosa Cliff with a breeding colony of Cormorants;
- a couple of sea lions, almost invisible from the boat;
- Condor Cliff, for us without condors;
- Glaciers Balmaceda and Serrano, interesting but by far not as impressive as the glaciers we saw in Argentina;
- weather depending a view of the Torres Mountains.
All together we were not very satisfied with this trip, also regarding the price.
Be aware it can be VERY cold on deck and I highly recommend wearing heavy clothes and a WINDPROOF jacket.
There is a cafeteria service on board and we got tea/coffee and on our way back a glass of pisco with glacier ice for free. During the way back we made a stop at the Estancia Perales, where one can have a lunch or walk around.
The company - Turismo 21 de Mayo - has two boats: Cutter ’21 de Mayo’ and a motor yacht ‘Alberto de Agostini’.
Price (Oct. 2010): 65.000 pesos (exclusive lunch).
I would recommend booking one day in advance (at the office of the company) if the weather forecast is good.
Hop spot
by the___gecko
Simply a spot to get to Torres Del Paine.
The town itself has nothing to offer except the fine hospitality of the local people there.
Was a real *** because I actually had forgotten to take the key to my room out of my pocket.
Had 1 night out at a bar with a couple of other trekers and got introduced to this stupid snaps game.

Q: car rental "hello,
can someone please tell me a car rental company that is reliable and cheaper than hertz? i got a good price from ppu..."
A: "Hi! Have a look at www.chileaustral.com. There seem to be some options than PPU. If you are flying in you will have more options in Punta Arenas than in Puerto Natales."
