by ncdpifh

I am traveling from Puerto Natales to Calafate by bus on Feb.11th, 2010.
Do I need to buy tickets in advance? What bus companies do this route?

Assumiong you are already in Pt. natales you could buy a ticket one day before you leave and otherwise Feb 11th.
There are a couple of companies setrvicing the route to El Calafate. We travelled with Cootra. See for more info:

COOTRA and ZAAHJ. it is recommendable to buy tickets in advance but not really possible until you are there. so if you are spending some days in Natales, buy your tickets the 1st day you arrive. both companies are on the same street, off of the main square. take the street heading along the left of the cathedral

Travel Tips for Puerto Natales

Torres del paine - the blue towers

by galy

Torres del Paine National Park is the only reason for most people to visit Puerto Natales. The park was declared Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO in 1978. The park is beautiful composition of spectacular mountain range, lakes, and glaciers. It is an ideal destination for Eco-tourism and adventure.

The park has a pretty good tourist infrastructure. You can find here all varietions of accomodation, form campgrounds all around the park, nice hostels like the Hosterias Pehoe, Torres and Lago Grey, or even a five star Hotel Explora.
The most popular activity is ofcourse hikking the beautiful pathes of the park, but you can go horseback riding as well, sailing on some lake a.s.o Sailing to Gery glacier in Torres del Paine

Glaciar Serrano - sail the Seno Ultima Esperanza

by Trekki

If you have one spare day (e.g. when your clothes are in the laundry), you might like to book a sailing trip to some remote glaciers in Seno Ultima Esperanza (Last Hope Sound).
The organizators have 2 ships - Cutter 21 de Mayo and Y/M Alberto de Agostini.
They leave daily at 8:30 a.m. from Puerto Natales for this 8 hours round-way trip (plus 1,5 hours at Glaciar Serrano).
The trip takes you along cormoran colonies, sea lion colonies, as well as along the cattle ranches at the fjord.

Approx. 40 USD per person.
The trip is extra rewarding !!

(on my picture - the left boat is 21 de Mayo).
(Please see my upcoming TLs for more pictures of this trip).

Torres del paine - trekking

by perfectly_zen

Just as you enter the park, they will give you a small trekking map, but very good, with the locations of campings and hostels, durations of each track, etc. The paths are usually vwell organized, clear and marked, so someone will hardly get lost.
There are two famous circuits to be made: one is called Paine Grande, and the other is called "W". I don´t know much about Paine grande, but I was told it takes from one week to 10 days, and it does a sort of circle around the mountains, starting at Laguna Amarga.

Cuernos del Paine

by ezaguryk

Horns of the Paine you can observe in its ends black rock; this is due to the tectonic forces and glacial that carved this bulk. It does something more than ten million years, this type of sedimentary rock covered ample areas in the region. At some moment these rocks had contact with the magma of the interior of the Earth which gave form to granite rocks. Soon, the colossal pressures of the planet made raise these impressive mountains that today we know like the Towers of the Paine.

When the glacial eras arrived, the ice covered the entire region. They only excelled the tops of the highest mountains. When retiring the ice, in the open left the granite, on which the black rock was conserved that had not been covered by the freezing.
Due to the previous today we can appreciate enormous Towers with different colors in a same bulk, which without a doubt is one of the greater quiet spectacles of the Patagónica nature

Viewpoint Nordenskjold Lake

by ezaguryk

This viewpoint gives to a wonderful vision of the bulk and the Cuernos del Paine, like also of the water mirror, that is the lake of the same name, that that extends on its feet.

Mirador Lago Nordenskjold : Este mirador nos da una visión maravillosa del macizo y los Cuernos del Paine, como también del espejo de agua, que es el lago del mismo nombre, que ese extiende a sus pies.
