Crypts
The dead are places in individual crypts or condos.
They have windows and inside the glass is pictures of the loved one, momentos, and artificial flowers.
A person touch I thought instead of just placing a cement slab at the end.

Is it possible to visit that Park from punta arenas (back and forth) in about 8 hours?
I was told this park is a must see. What can I see there?
It is 410 km one way from Punta Arenas, so you can calculate yourself how impossible this is... The 240 km from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales already take about 4.5 hours one way.
You would need another one to seven days in the National Park to enjoy the scenery, go hiking, etc.
What you can see? Fantastic landscapes and red rock formations, and the famous "torres" = towers pointing like fingers into the sky. One of Chile's biggest marketing success stories.

You will find the monument for Bernardo O'Higgins not far from the place, where you are leaving the port of Punta Arenas. Capitan General Bernardo O'Higgins is the "father" of Chile's independance and you will find his monuments in almost any bigger town of Chile.
The Tourist Information Office of Punta Arenas is located in a pavilion on the main square close to the Magellan Statue. Maps, tourist information books, accommodation and tour reservations can be done here. The staff is multi lingual and can assist with any recommendations one may have.
When you have to bear
with the end of the world
you have to live in luxury
was the motto of José Menéndez and his wife Maria Behety who had come from Spain at the end of the 19th century. They bought a lot of land and started with some lambs that they imported from the Falkland-islands. Soon they became one of the most wealthy families in Patagonia, owning more than 2 millions of sheep. At that time the wool of sheep was worth a fortune, a long time before the synthetic fibres were invented. Palacio Sara Braun is one of the many Palais of the former Dynasty Menendez - Braun - Nogueira, it is partly used as a museum nowadays, partly as a hotel (see my hoteltip !)
The photographs of this tip are showing the most interesting exhibits that you will find in the Museo Regional de Magallanes about the history of Patagonia beginning with fossiles, that were found in that area, with a boat, that was made out of a trunk of a single tree, weapons of the early european settlers etc. Nowadys the culture of the native inhabitants of Patagonia are to be seen only in the museums, because almost all of them were killed like animals by the early settlers.
